I have discovered an ancestor of mine died in 1879 in New York he was a ship's master.
I do have a copy of his death cert. but I'm curious to find out what else is available.

He appears to be on the 1880 federal census mortality schedule, which covers people who died between 1 Jun. 1879 and 31 May 1880.
Coulter, Alexander, age 54, male, white, married, born Scotland, parents born Scotland, occupation - shipmaster, died in October, cause of death - valv. dis. of heart, resident of county - 1/12, place of death - 27 Broadway, name of attending physician - H. Woltman, cor.

News of Capt. Coulter's death was reported in 28 Oct 1879 issue of New York Times.
Search "27 Broadway" and Stevens House". http://www.fultonhistory.com/Fulton.html

Try a Boolean search on that site for coulter and October w/2 1879. Quite a few articles pop up.
