I have a list of Llanidloes Men who seved during the First World War.
There are just far too many to list them all (approximately 280 names) on here but if anyone would like me to look up any of their ancestors please let me know.
Each man is listed with his address and regiment.

hello lloydy,
i would appreciate it if you could look up any ELLIS family in your list, cheers, kali.

Hello Lloydy
My Gr Grandfather William Hugh Williams fought in the first World War in Gallapoli ~ he was in the 'A' Company 7th Royal Welsh Fusiliers.
I believe he lived in Cemetry Square, Llanidloes around that time. He came back from the War and was killed in an accident in the Drill Hall of the RWF in Victoria Avenue, Llanidloes in 1926, he was 29 years old.
I hope he is mentioned in your list. Look forward to hearing from you.
Kind Regards
Shirles

Hi Kali
I have found the following:
Ellis, J H 47 Long Bridge Street, 1/7 RWF
Hope he's yours!!!

Hi Shirles
I looked for your William Williams and he isn't in the list, it does say at the beginning that it is "probably not complete".
However, I did find the following Williams interesting mainly because of the address:
Williams, Henry 7 Cemetery Square, 1/7 RWF
Williams, Robert 7 Cemetery Square, 4/7 Prov Batt RWF
My Great Uncle John Frederick Jones fought in Gallipoli too, but sadly was killed in action. His family were living at Smithfield Street at the time and remained in Llanidloes. My father was born at No 10 Foundry Terrace, and I have still have relatives there now.

Hi Jan ~ that is interesting ~ I've looked up William Hugh Williams Death Cert and he was living at No.8 Cemetry Square. I am wondering if his father Robert Williams came down from Pwllheli to join the RWF and lived next door (or would it have been over the road)? However, shame William Hugh isn't mentioned, I have a photograph VERY creased of him in uniform with Shire Horses. At his funeral there was a firing party from 'A' Company RWF under the command of Lieut.R.B.S.Davies. The bearers were Ptes.Ll Morris, John Mills, P.Evans, J.H.Rowlands, R.D.Jones, and O.Benbow.
John Mills is of particular interest as I am pretty sure he would have been an Uncle to William Hugh's wife, my Grandmother, whose mother was Sarah Mills.
If you can find out any other little pieces of information, I would appreciate it.
My Auntie is in Llanidloes Hospital at the moment, we went to visit her two weeks ago and Wales is still looking wonderful even in the winter. I still have one Uncle but lots of cousins living in Llanidloes, from my father's side of the family, he was born in Kerry, but lived most of his childhood in Cwmbelan.
I was born in Caersws and most of my mother's family are still there although declining in numbers now.
Nice to talk to you Jan ~ I hope your Uncle was mentioned in the list of Llanidloes men.
Kind regards Shirles

thank you jan,
i do have a john i will go through my files and check out the address, thanks again, kali.

Hi Shirles
The only John Mills listed died in August 1915 :-\
Jan

Hi Jan
I had started to write a reply and now I've lost it so if you end up with two you will understand why.
Is there any other information i.e. age, address on the John Mills who died in 1915, he is obviously not the one that was a bearer at my Grandfather's funeral, but he may well be on my Family Tree I have seven 'John Mills', it would be good to put that information against the correct John Mills.
Many thanks for your help.
Kind regards Shirles
-
Lloydy, I had a stepfather who came from Llanidloes, he wouldn't have been old enough for the war, but i wonder if his family are listed, the name is Bradbury.
Bodger

Hi Shirles
Here's the full details of John Mills:
Mills, John B 10 Penygraig Street, 1/7 RWF Died of Wounds August 1915

-
Hi Bodger
There is three Bradbury's listed, so you could be in luck!!!!
Bradbury, Isaac, 12 Penygraig, 2/7 RWF
Bradbury, Tom, King's Own Yorks
Bradbury Wm, 22 Long Bridge Street, Serft, 2/7 RWF
Jan ;)
P.S. I am distantly related to the Bradbury's from Llanidloes. Could you PM me with your information and then we can see if there's a connection.

Hi Jan
Many thanks for the link to the original post ~ believe it or not I went through all the Wales, Montgomeryshire and all that would come up was your last email to me. I have been looking through some unidentified photographs of army personnel I haven't found my Grandfather yet, but I thought you might be interested in the link below:

hi
I'm trying to get my grandfathers regimental number and war details but having no luck. Found your site and hope you may be able to help
My grandfather was
Edward Jones, served in the 10th Battalion South Wales Borderers
He was born 2nd June 1892 in Lower Green Llanidloes
( I have a certificate of War Service from Lannidloes Council)
-
Hello Elwood
I've looked at my list and can see the following Edwards:
Jones, Edward, 2 Kington Cottages, 2/7 R.W.F
Jones, Edw. Osborne, 15 Long Bridge Street, Corpl., A.S.C.
The list I have belonged to a GG Aunt of mine. It was compiled by Edmund O Jones, on November 9th 1915 and list Llanidloes men "who are now serving or have served during the present war". No regimental numbers are listed, only name, address and batallion.
Do you know if he died during the war, or was he a survivor? If he died you can search for his medal card at http://www.cwgc.org/
-
hi Lloydy
many thanks for your prompt reply
I dont think either of those are my grandad
He may not be on your list as he joined up in Abercarn, Mon at what was probaly the time the last was compiled
He survived the War and was wounded at Mmametz Wood (I believe)
many thanks again

Hello Jan
I hope you and your family are all well, just thought, as I had notification of these messages, I would pop on and say 'hello'. I have finished writing up all my family history books thus far so I am once again back researching and trying to demolish some old brickwalls.

I've just seen that you looked in your book and found two names for me - thanks very much for doing so. It's much appreciated. Sorry I've only just noticed your reply - shame on me for not being on the forum for so long!

Dear Lloydy, I know your original message was posted a long time ago but hope springs eternal, so here goes:
I'm looking for info on my great-grandfather, John Maurice Jones. I know that the family lived at 13, Cemetery Square. I do NOT know if that was before or after WW1. He was a private in the Royal Welch Fusiliers. I would be so grateful for any info
-
Hi Nanny No1
You're in luck :D Here he is:-
Jones, John M., 13, Cemetery Square, 1/7 R.W.F
He was in the same battallion as my Great Uncle John Frederick Jones, 39 Smithfield Street.
I've just had another good luck through the list and am amazed at how many are relatives of mine.....I hadn't realised before!!!!!
-
Hello both
If my memory serves me right my Grandfather lived at 9 Cemetery Square, however, William Hugh Williams was not on your |List of Llanidloes Men Jan. He died in the RWF Headquarters in Victoria Avenue which is still there, having fought in WWI.
He certainly would have known John Maurice Jones.
Hope you and your family are keeping well Jan.
Best wishes

Hi,
I am putting together a local history project on the men from Llanidloes and district who served in the First World War and came upon your post and the reference to the list. I know it's an old thread by now but hope I can still contact you about it as this would be exactly the sort of thing the project needs - I'm part of a community group and we plan to put on an exhibition, among other things. The aim is to mark the centenary and bring back into the community's memory the names on the war memorial, but we'd also be keen to name all those who served.
My ancestor is on the war memorial also, David Mills, but I don't think he'd be on the list as he went to S Africa in 1910 and enlisted from there. He's also on the Trefeglwys list of names, and I assume your list is Llanidloes only?
Do you think there's any way your list could feature in our project and exhibition? It'd be great if it could, there's so much interest in this in the community
Best wishes,
Nia

Hello Nia
My Grandfather, William Hugh Williams, was in the Royal Welch Fusiliers and fought in WW1 in Gallipoli. He was born in Pwllheli, Carnarvonshire, but he married my Grandmother who was born in Kerry, Montgomeryshire (Powys now) and they lived at 8 Cemetery Square, Llanidloes.
William Hugh Williams survived the War only to have a fatal accident in the RWF Headquarters in Victoria Avenue, Llanidloes in 1926 he was 29 years old and left a Widow and five children.
I have no proof but I think William's father Robert Williams came down from Pwllheli to join the RWF and lived next door at No.9 Cemetery Square. I have a photograph VERY creased of William in uniform with Shire Horses.
According to his Obituary there was a firing party from 'A' Company RWF under the command of Lieut.R.B.S.Davies at his funeral. The bearers were Ptes.Ll Morris, John Mills, P.Evans, J.H.Rowlands, R.D.Jones, and O.Benbow.
My Grandmother's maiden name was Mills her mother was Sarah Mills. These Mills are the Mills of Radnorshire.
I hope this information has been helpful to you ~ good luck with your project.
Best wishes

In a previos post 2006, Lloydy very kindly gave me details of three Bradbury men
Isaac, b. 1879, 12 Penygraig, 2/7 RWF
Thomas, b. 1879, Kings Own Yorkshire
William,b. 1881, 22, Longbridge St. 2/7 RWF
With the new interest in this subject, are there any readers who may have connections to the Bradburys,
Thank You bodger

Hi Shirley I am related to the Corfields and some where the Mills. Most of my family are from Llanidloes. My G grandmother was a Corfield from Kerry Nr Newtown, she married Richard George from the Llanidloes area. I'm also related to the Lewis family of Llangurig, the Evans family of Llanidloes, the Griffiths family of Devils bridge and Llangurig(massive and i mean massive family), the Bennetts of Trefeglwys, and the Davies family of Llandinam and Llangurig.
Going back to the list of men do you have a Richard L Davies who died in WW1? Hes on the plaque on the Llanidloes town hall, hes my great grandfather's brother.
-
Hello Dinamboyz
Sorry for the delay in replying I have been on holiday. Your Great Grandmother was my father's Auntie Tilly. Which daughter of Auntie Tilly's was your mother? Hopefully I am coming to Llanidloes on November 3rd/4th perhaps we could meet to discuss our family connection.
Best wishes

Hi Shirley
Martha Matilda (Tilly) was my G Grandmother, I never met her as she died 30 Nov 1973. A number of years before I was born. Martha Matilda (Tilly) had a number of children who have all died now. The last of those children to die was my grand mother Gloria who passed away in 2011.
It would be great to meet you. My email address is lewis_electrical@hotmail.co.uk
Drop me a email and we can arrange a meet. I have to drop my other half Saturday night in Folkstone as she is off to Paris. I will be staying over night (Sat 2nd Nov) in Folkstone but should be back in Wales by the late afternoon (Sun 3rd Nov). I'm not sure if my mother (Gloria's daughter) will be available, but shes hoping to make it.
Kind regards
Karl
