Title: McCurdy, Stringer, Marshall, Spratt - Northern Ireland
Post by: Infobunny on Friday 09 May 14 11:19 BST (UK)
Hi to the wonderful Ireland-Antrim board,

I have family in Northern Ireland.  At least that's where they were when I last looked and many of you wonderful people have contributed to helping me chase them down  ;D

Really would be lost without you all.  But I have a new challenge!

I have a black and white photo of some people that I know are family but I'm not sure when the photo was taken or where.  It's just marked with some names and that they are 'Northern Ireland relatives'.

In the photo are:
Charles Marshall (possibly died 1984, Laura's husband)
Laura Marshall (nee Lowry, born Sep Q 1913, Belfast - is on my tree)
William Marshall (their son who looks like he is still at school as a teenager.  Can't see his face as he is looking down at his dog)
Sooty Marshall (William's dog that looks like a poodle)
Meta (no last name)
Clifford Spratt (who was in his final year of medical school at the time of the photo)
Dorothy Spratt (Clifford's mother, born as Sarah Dorothy Lowry in Dec Q 1906, Belfast - on my tree)
Fred Stringer
Pauline McCurdy (Fred's daughter.  Also have another photo that states her husband was a reverend)
Rosemary McCurdy (Pauline's daughter who looks about the same age-ish as William Marshall)

I can't find out anything more on the above people who aren't Lowrys by birth - but even then I can't go any further forward than their births.  I'm hoping someone will either have these people in their trees or know of them somehow.  My Bourdot aunts used to visit and write to Laura Lowry Marshall but they are all gone now so I can't ask (always the way).

I'm sure they are all related but I don't know how exactly how.  There are no Freds, Paulines or Metas in the Lowry family (nine kids).

Any help would be much appreciated!

Cheers,

Hopefully someone will recognise the family group.

Especially loved:

This Baptismal register has at least one (haven't checked for more) birth where the father is a Spratt and mother is a Dorothy Lowry:

Hi Scotmum,

Ooo...that's interesting!  I've copied the entry below:

1940    Elizabeth Joan    Henry Beattie Spratt    Dorothy Lowry    17 Apr 1940    24 Jan 1940    A Lyle Harrison    36

I don't have anything that gives me the name of Mr Spratt so I'm not sure if it is the right family.  But it's still a great find!!!   ;D  You are awesome, Scotmum!

I have found another photo that tells me that the minister called McCurdy was named Charles.

Cheers,

Hello Bunny
I am very interested in chatting to you about the Pauline Stringer/Cassidy as I think I can give you a bit more information and am also hoping to see the photograph of her. I have been researching a branch of my family that has lead me to Pauline. She is the granddaughter of a Sarah Dunn who is my great great grandmother (biological). Pauline’s mother was Charlotte Cassidy/Stinger and Charlotte was the daughter of Sarah Dunn/Cassidy and Henry Cassidy. Henry died and Sarah married again and became Sarah Chartres.
I hope to hear from you soon

I note that you haven’t given any indication of dates or places.

Is this the birth of Charlotte Cassidy in Belfast?

Hello KG
Thank you for getting in touch, yes this is the Charlotte I have been researching. The Pauline McCurdy in the photo would be her daughter and the Lowry connection is from Eleanor Dunn (Sarah Dunn’s sister) who married a Lowry.

Hi JRo10,

Hey cuzzie!  Distant cuzzie, but cuzzie nonetheless! Pleased to meet you! Kiltaglassan is correct in finding Charlotte Cassidy's birth and parents. Our common ancestors are Sarah Dunn's grandparents. It's been quite a journey to get there but I've been grateful for the Irish civil records coming online. The photo I have isn't fabulous for detail as it is a line up of people, but at least someone thought to name them!
Glad to have you on board. I have no idea if Sarah Chartres/Charters had any more children in her first or second marriage apart from Charlotte or which line you come from. But all in good time! Let me know if you have any questions or just want to chat. All those posts add up and give you the button to PM me.

Cheers,

I have no idea if Sarah Chartres/Charters had any more children in her first or second marriage apart from Charlotte......

According to 1911 Irish census, she had been married for 10 years and had no children.

Hello Bunny
Thanks for getting in touch. Nice to meet you and it would be great news if we are distant cousins.  My great grandmother Maud was the half sister of Charlotte Cassidy and as far as I can see Sarah only had those two children, I am fairly sure I am on the right track but I am sceptical until the last piece falls into place. I think Sarah’s father was Joseph Dunn but I have not gone further back so it would be great to get the names of Sarah’s grandparents (our common ancestors).
Sarah and Charlotte are buried together in Dundonald cemetery near Stormont in Belfast. My great grandmother Maud was adopted at the age of 3 months, so she didn’t know Sarah at all. Sad times but I have my ideas about what might have happened. We can chat more about that and about the rest.
Thanks again

Hi KG
Thank you for the census link.
Charlotte Cassidy was the daughter of Sarah’s first marriage to Henry Cassidy, so technically they should have written step daughter on this Census I suppose.
My great grandmother had been adopted in 1896 so was long gone by this time.
