Title: McClellan, McClallen, McLellan. McClanon, McLeonard
Post by: bertyoung on Thursday 08 May 14 17:51 BST (UK)
Hi I am trying to help a friend surname McClellan.
I have managed to get back to a Thomas McClellan, brush maker, 1852-1912 from Manchester, however on his marriage cert his name is McLeonard and his fathers given name is Daniel McLeonard, silk weaver, deceased.
He was married in St Chads church in 1871.
any help with Thomas'  birth or anything about Daniel would be grand
Bert
ps Thomas's first born was called Daniel so I wondered about a Scottish connection naming pattern.

Wow thank you,
I got Thomas' dob from census and marriage cert details.
The 1901 and 1881 results are the correct family but I have never seen the 1861 results as I was working on the name Daniel however thinking about it there was one census result where Thomas' son Daniel was called David.
I will check out these new details and report back
Thank you once again.

Hi, sorry for the late reply my father in law is in hosp having a hip replacement so have been on taxi and visiting duty.

There is an address on the marriage certificate:
Thomas - 15 Bosdins Buildings
Catherine - 57 Limon Street, Rochdale Road.

and there is one on Daniels birth certificate:
17 New Mount Street, Manchester.

I think I may also have found David/Daniel in the 1851 census as:
David McCleland age 28 unmarried lodger weaver Ireland
with a William McCleland 30 Weaver.

thank you

Brushmaking is an interesting occupation, as it had what was in effect an illegal trade union.

Have a look at the website for the Society of Brushmakers' Descendants, which explains how people in the trade travelled around the country.

One of my lot from Liverpool unexpectedly turned up in Exeter in 1841. Now I know why!

Thank you all for your help, I have ordered the birth cert for a Thomas Mcclannon born 1851 as I think that might be my man and should give parentage clues.

Birth certificate received.
Thomas McClannon born 4 October 1851 -  19 Pilling Street Manchester

Mother Mary Ann McClannon formally Nowlan

Father Daniel McClannon -  weaver.

I am thinking  they got married between the census and October or did they? what are the chances of them never having married as I cannot find a marriage entry at all?

more head scratching needed me thinks.

Thank you, that's interesting.
I have not come across people 'lying' about being married before, I wonder why this might have happened? especially as Daniel died 2 years later in 1868.

Wow thank you, that fits with ages and occupations. I wonder why they waited so long. The mystery continues.
