Title: Jersey census 1881, Nationality abbreviations?
Post by: Dauro on Tuesday 06 May 14 20:30 BST (UK)
I have here the census 1881 for Jersey, St. Helier.

Additional information:
- Mr Hodgson born in England
-Mrs. Hodgson born in Nederlands Indië (Dutch India), British subject..............BSB (?)
-Daughter Hodgson born Straits settlements East India, British subject........????

Mrs Hodgson is not the mother of the daughter of Mr. Hodgson.

My interest goes out to the the last column of the census where some abbreviations have been written down. Could they be an explanation about the nationality of Mrs. Hodgson and Daughter Hodgson?
Anyone an idea what the abbreviations could mean?

Dauro...

From searching on the web "BSB" may be "British Subject [by] Birth"

not sure about "OP" but it also appears to turn up with similar references to British Subject
