Hi
I am looking for a Margaret (Maggie) Cherry LATTA on the 1891 and/or 1901 Census for Ayr, Scotland. She was born 1867. In 1897 she was enrolled on Maybole Poor List, age 38, a widow with 2 sons & 1 daughter, and still on List as at 1905.
CHERRY was very possibly her maiden name, and if so I believe she is on 1881 Census as Maggie CHERRY age 13 at Mill Street, Ayr with parents John CHERRY & Margaret SIMPSON; and on IGI as born 1867 with mother's name incorrectly input as Mary instead of Margaret.
Am trying to find the names of her 3 children. (And her late husband's name - children's names might hold a clue).
Any help appreciated
Thanks

This is the only Cherry-Latta marriage registered in all of Scotland from 1855 onward on ScotlandsPeople, and the date and location would certainly seem to fit.
CHERRY MAGGIE LATTA JAMES 1887 605/ 47 Maybole
Searching for Latta births registered in Ayrshire between 1887 and 1897 when Margaret was described as a widow produces 11 births, six of which are registered in the Maybole registration district where Margaret and James married. The Maybole births are:
LATTA ROBERT M 1888 605/ 104 Maybole
LATTA JANET F 1888 605/ 124 Maybole
LATTA ANNIE F 1889 605/ 226 Maybole
LATTA MARY F 1891 605/ 175 Maybole
LATTA GEORGE M 1894 605/ 21 Maybole
LATTA JAMES CALDWELL M 1896 605/ 196 Maybole
Not all of these may be children of the marriage, in particular the two 1888 births do not have consecutive registration numbers so they are not twins, but there is only a difference of 20 in the number so they must have been registered relatively closely together. A quick look for infant Latta deaths in the same time period doesn't produce any deaths registered at all anywhere in Ayrshire.
Searching for later Latta deaths, with a mother's maiden surname of Cherry produces these three deaths, which would seem to fit with the births of Janet, Annie, and James Caldwell above.
LATTA ANNIE 85 CHERRY 1974 615/ 908 Glasgow, Martha St
LATTA JAMES CALDWELL 78 CHERRY 1975 605/ 438 Glasgow, Martha St
LATTA JANET 92 CHERRY 1981 603/ 14 Glasgow, Martha St

This is James, Margaret and family in the 1891 Scotland census.
LATTA JAMES 1891 M 28 605/ 1/ 17 Maybole Ayr
LATTA MARGARET 1891 F 24 605/ 1/ 17 Maybole Ayr
LATTA NETTIE 1891 F 2 605/ 1/ 17 Maybole Ayr
LATTA ANNIE 1891 F 1 605/ 1/ 17 Maybole Ayr
This means that the Janet and Annie Latta births noted above are the children of James and Margaret. Robert born in 1888 is the son of a James and Sarah Latta, so not one of their's.
In the 1901 Scotland census on ScotlandsPeople the family name has been recorded as Latto, and the full family is Margaret and five children.
LATTO MARGARET 1901 F 34 605/ 1/ 33 Maybole Ayr
LATTO NETTIE 1901 F 12 605/ 1/ 33 Maybole Ayr
LATTO ANNIE 1901 F 11 605/ 1/ 33 Maybole Ayr
LATTO MARY 1901 F 9 605/ 1/ 33 Maybole Ayr
LATTO GEORGE 1901 M 7 605/ 1/ 33 Maybole Ayr
LATTO JAMES 1901 M 4 605/ 1/ 33 Maybole Ayr
So the only Latta birth registered in Maybole between 1887 and 1897 that is not a child of James and Margaret is Robert, born in 1888.
