I'm looking for a map of Diss, fine enough to show streets.
I can find 1880, both at old maps, and via the wondrous Norfolk Council viewer:
http://www.historic-maps.norfolk.gov.uk/maps
But the 1840 tithe map in that viewer has no Diss data, and the same goes for enclosure.
Does anyone know a good map for 1780-ish?
(I've been mainly researching London, and may have been spoilt for map availability, you know
full street detail, updated every 30 years :) )

Hi BugBear,
Don't know if you've already seen this - a set on Flickr
Early 19th century maps of Diss, rather small images, but if you have good eyesight you might be able to make out some of the names, etc.
I was struggling ::)

I think much of that is the semi-famous (in Diss, anyway) 1637 tithe map:

But crucially, not all. Thanks, that's helpful.

I don't think street maps were used much outside cities!
With only 2000 or so population (2246 in 1801), everyone knew everyone else! Why would anyone need a street map?! ;D

Often, so that there was an official document of who OWNED what - e.g. tithe maps.

those old maps of Diss are interesting -- shame not quite clear enough to read all the names :(
I am looking for info on Moses Levi who married & brought up a family in Diss in the late 1700's
I have the info from the PRs but would love to know where he came from before that -- how a young Jewish lad (assumption from his name) landed up in a small Norfolk town in the 1780's

Seems to be 1903.

Tithe maps I have seen, of villages and small towns, show plot numbers, not addresses and street names? ;D
The 1841 census of Diss, Description of Enumeration District simply says:
Enumeration District 11
All that part of the Township of Diss, consisting of Cock Street, the Back Lane, and Cock Street Green
Enumeration District 12
All that part of the Township of Diss, consisting of Crown Street, Rayden Road and Shelfanger Road.
Enumeration District 13
All that part of the Township of Diss, consisting of Mount Street, Walcot Green, and Burston Road
Enumeration District 14
All that part of the Township of Diss, consisting of the late Common and Park Fields.
Enumeration District 15
All that part of the Township of Diss, consisting of Mere Street, Marketplace, Church Street and Half Moon Street
Enumeration District 16
All that part of the Township of Diss, consisting of Heywood to the boundary of Tibbenham Long Row

I have a large hand drawn map of Diss and Shelfhanger in about 1828 that has some road and lane names in it. It is about 6" to the mile so its quite detailed. Where exactly are you looking for?

Hi Bugbear an everyone else,
I know its is a while since this thread was last accessed but the map images of Diss 1637 are magic.
Part of my family hale from Diss and these maps add to my historical information. Thank you so much. My earliest members are slipping into the 1690's so quite relevant.
KGarard One would need a street map for 1841 for those districts any idea where that might be found please.
Thanks everyone.

As I said back in 2014, street maps weren't of much use in small towns and country areas.
Many towns didn't have addresses as such!
People just knew who lived where. :D

Hi KGarrard,
Yes I read that and I understand but you gave a list of Enumeration Districts with streets as boundaries,
such as:
"The 1841 census of Diss, Description of Enumeration District simply says:
Enumeration District 11
All that part of the Township of Diss, consisting of Cock Street, the Back Lane, and Cock Street Green.
Enumeration District 12
All that part of the Township of Diss, consisting of Crown Street, Rayden Road and Shelfanger Road"
and so on...
I was wondering where one would get a diagram showing those sections of the Township of Diss in 1841 . or 1851.
Thanks for those districts in any case.
Cheers, Essnell

The Descriptions of the Enumerator's route are available wherever you look at census images.
Page 1 of each Folio.
I copied, and posted, these descriptions back in 2014.

Okay. Thanks for the explanation KGarrard.
