Title: Ann H Young South Shields
Post by: elainevz on Sunday 04 May 14 14:06 BST (UK)
I am looking for information on my gg grandmother Ann H(eseledin/Heseltine) Young who was born in 1843 and died 1911.  She was married to Francis Carlin on 30 August 1865 at Holy Trinity, South Shields, Durham.  I have her father as George Young and her mother as Mary Ann (maiden name unknown).  Any information on her ancestors would be most welcome.

Welcome to RootChat

Ann seems to come up as Ann Heseladin Carlin on the family search free indexes for 1911 - could this be a clue to the mothers maiden name  ???

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XWH7-G1T

No clues given on the entry of birth of Thomas Young

Alice seems to be Alice EVANS Young  (so another possible to check) - South Shields Durham. Vol 24 - Page 22 - Q2 Apr/May/June 1945.

I do have the probate information thanks.  It helped to confirm the name of Alice's husband who is proving rather elusive.

Did the marriage cert (Ann and Francis) confirm that Anns father George was a builder?

Assuming that the 1851 family is the right one, this is them in 1861.

1861 census.
Mary A. Young, mar, 39,
Ann Young, dau, 18,
Alice Young, dau, 16,
George L. Young, son, 9,
Matthew H. Young, son, 4,
All b. South Shields
RG9/3787/22/38

Mary Ann then remarries to a John Dryden.

27/5/1867 St Stephens South Shields. John Dryden, 45, Father - James Dryden. and Mary Ann Young, 44. Father - Matthew Heron. Both Widowed.

1871 census.
124 Palmerston St., Westoe,
John Dridon, 51, Agricultural Labourer, b. Rothbury,
Mary A. Dridon, wife, 49, b. South Shields,
Alicia Young, dau, unm, 25, General Servant, b. South Shields
George Young, Stepson, 18, Waterman, b. South Shields,
Matthew Young, Stepson, 14, Water Boy b. South Shields
RG10/5032/78/82

There is a baptism on Familysearch for a Matthew Heron Young, b. 26 Nov, bap 25 Dec 1856, S.Shields. Parents George and Mary Ann. Plus two earlier Matthew Heron Young baptisms to the same parents.

There is a marriage at Newcastle St. Andrew, 21 June 1841. George Young (Father - Thomas) and Mary Ann Heron (Father - Matthew).

Digging a bit further, I think this is the right family.

In 1901 Ann Carlin is widowed and has a daughter Ada, 24, and a niece Alice Brown, aged 22, b. South Shields, living with her.

A baptism at St. Michael, Westoe. 23 Dec 1878. Alice Brown, daughter of Mark Wigham Brown, and Alice.

Mark Wigham Brown married Alice Young, St Mary Tyne Dock 10 Feb 1878.

So I suspect Alice (Snr) is Anns younger sister. Mark and Alice are in Kent 1881 and onwards and have a son George Liddle Young Brown, baptized 1 June 1884 Maidstone Kent. Ann has a brother baptized George Liddel Young in 1852.

Probably still need some certs to confirm though.

Thanks so much Alan.  This does seem to be tying together.  Could you perhaps help with another query?  My gg grandfather John Henry Hunt b 1872 (Ann's son in law married to Alice) vanishes.  Story his son told is that he disappeared around Christmas.

On the National Probate Calendar, Alice De Reder Hunt, died Manchester 8 Aug 1853,  is described as a married woman. Probate granted to Frank Carlin, Civil Servant, and Edwin Hunt, Retired Water Board Clerk.

I'd be tempted to get a copy of the Probate record to see who Edwin Hunt is. Should give his address etc. Is he really John Henry, or was he invented as John Henry had disappeared some time in the past?

The Frank Carlin mentioned in the probate is her son in law, husband of her daughter Doris.  In the 1911 census, John Henry Hunt has the occupation of Water Rent Collector.  A copy of the probate could solve the mystery.  Thanks.
