Title: Marriage in South Cowton
Post by: emeltom on Thursday 01 May 14 15:14 BST (UK)
Hi,

Dors anyone have access to South Cowton marriages? Familysearch has a marriage in South Cowton on 25th November 1794 between a James Medcalf(Metcalf) and a Mary Whiliar. I'd like to know exactly what the entry says, in particular Mary's surname as I cannot find a birth for a Mary Whiliar any where. I have even tried all the variations thrown up by Soundex.

Ther is a tree on Mundia with James and Mary but that gives the surname as Whittaker and I'm not wholly convinced that this is correct either. James was born South Cowton in 1770 so I would think that Mary's birth would be around that date, particularly as the NBI gives burials for James in South Cowton in 1844 aged 74 and for Mary in 1843 aged 73 which matches with the ages given on the death certs.

If anyone can help I'd be so grateful.

Thanks,

Emeltom

The entry does list the names as James Medcalf and Mary Whiliar and it was  by banns. The surname for her could easily be Whitiar as there is a mark above the l which could have been there to signify a t. This is from the Bishops Transcripts FHL Film #207579. A baptism for daughter Elizabeth in 1797 lists the surname as Metcalf. there is also a baptism for Anthony Metcalf son of James and Mary on 1 Nov 1795 and their residence is North Cowton. Hope this helps.

Many thanks for that info. The fact that the l could be a t gives a definite lean towards the name possibly being Whiticar. I'll have to have another root around.

Thanks again,
