I think this is Robert Sheppard, Lance Corporal in the Irish Guards, killed at the battle of Festubert in May 1915 but i would welcome any observations re dates or uniforms please
Just to add, The Leinster Regiment was based in Birr (Crinkle Barracks) until 1920s

Hi and welcome to Rootschat...I think it's much earlier...The daters will need to see the back if you have it.

Looks 1880's but ditto above.
Not Irish Guards as they had a 4 button sequence.
-
Could be the Leinster Regiment c1900. Disbanded 1922. Badges indistinct but about the right shape.
-
Looks like Herefordshire Rifles possibly.
-
Thanks for all replies - i will scan in back of photo tonight!
-
Good evening,
I don't like to be picky Jim but that says "The Hertfordshire Regiment" around those badges. It does look very similar to that in the photo though.

Sorry you're right, should read Hertfordshire Regiment.
Can we see the back?
-
Hope this works!!! you can move the photo from left to right
-
Typical late 1870's back. Still in use early 1880's.
So Hertfordshire Volunteer Rifles late 1870's-early 1880's in my view.

thanks jim - thats really thrown me
robert sheppard was born in 1880 approx
now i havent a clue who this guy is
-
Good evening,
With Jims date I would say that's within the time frame for that style of uniform. Havn't been able to find any other similar badge so will go with Jim on that as well.

Just to add some notes to this thread re: Lambert photography studios. There doesn't seem to be much information about them online, but I have a photo of my great-grandfather which was taken at the Francis Lamberte studio in Parsonstown in the late 1880s. I assume this studio was the same as yours despite the difference in spelling as they seem to be based in the same locations. They seem to have dropped the Carlow branch by the time of my photo:
John's photo (late 1870s-early 1880s)
'Lambert' studio
Dublin Street, Carlow
Parsonstown
Nenagh
My photo (c1888-1889)
'Francis Lamberte' studio
John's Place, Parsonstown
Castle Street, Nenagh
There is another set of photos here from the same period as John's: https://www.flickr.com/photos/pellethepoet/5949788185/

I would also add that the Leinster Regiment uniform worn by my great-grandfather in another photo (below) looks extremely similar / identical to yours, despite the different cap badge on your man's lap. Perhaps the cap belonged to somebody else, a recently deceased relative or something?
-
Irish Guards were formed 1900 and this pic, as said, predates 1900. and as also said Irish Guards buttons in groups of four.

Chris. Thank you so much for posting the photos. I think my photo is also Leinster Regiment uniform, probably same vintage as yours? When was your Leinster Regiment photo taken
-
The original of my Leinster Regiment photo is missing so I can't check the back, though as you can see it was taken at Lawrence studios in Dublin. He signed up for the regiment in Dublin in 1885 before being posted to Parsonstown, so it was probably taken then.
