Umm who said they can do that ???
I have just been notified a few weeks back that I should change as Windows XP will no longer be supported? Does this mean that I can no longer use it as I am now or just that they WANT me to buy a new version of Windows?
Unfortunatly it also says that security will no be provided on XP so that alone is a good reason to change, what is best version of windows for my old desktop?
Feeling older than my windows now :-\

Hi I asked the local computer man and he installed AVG on my XP

You have to read that notice from Microsoft very carefully!
XP is NOT being made redundant - it's just that MS aren't supporting it any more!
Which simply means that there will be no more updates to XP.
However, almost all the anti-virus software companies say they will continue to support their XP products for the forseeable future!
I wouldn't worry about XP too much - some time in the future you will want to buy a newer PC (or Mac, or Pad, or something!) and then you can start to worry about Windows 8! ;D :o ;D

Or if you can hang on a bit longer, then wait for Windows 9. Some of the reviews suggest that Windows 8 is the Guinea-Pig version of what MS is trying to achieve, and the results (i.e. what Windows 8 should have been) will be published in Windows 9 ::)

Or, folks could really exercise their 'grey matter' and take the plunge into a Linux based operating system ;D.
-
I am still using xp and have no problem with it, I use google chrome web browser and the free avast antivirus. Google chrome is still supporting xp for the time being, I think firefox is as well.
My husband installed a Linux operating system into his computer, he bought a CD with the Linux Mint operating system for a few pounds on ebay. He hasn't found using it much different to windows.

Is this the first of many listed bad news!

Brian - that's just Internet Exploder! Nothing to do with XP ;D
But, IMHO, if you are still using IE, you deserve everything you get!! ;D ;D ;D :-X :-X

Well call me CYNICAL, but the first day of vulnerability and Microsoft says you would be better to update from XP..... >:(
Maybe K Garrad should read on as well as me.....
"It means there will be no more official security updates and bug fixes for XP from the firm.
Cyber security firm Symantec said it had carried out tests which confirmed that "the vulnerability crashes Internet Explorer on Windows XP".
"This will be the first zero day vulnerability that will not be patched for Windows XP users," it added."
I will be consulting my computer man.
Thanks to all for the info..

Hiya Haydon,
I've popped your question onto this topic that discusses Windows XP coming to an end of it's support.

I for one won't be using my desktop XP machine for any purchasing/banking services.
[All data that is important I would burn to disc (DVD/CD) and even transfer to external hard drive.]
Cheap replacement desktop purchased with Windows 7 installed and laptop also with Windows 7 installed for data on the move.
I don't like change, so waiting for Windows 9 or even the proposed free Windows cloud.

I understand (from reading the current issue of PC Advisor) that an update on Windows 8.1 called i believe 8.1. update!! was issued on 8th April. The same article continues that we have W8.2 to come some time early next year, followed by Windows 9. Sooner or later we shall reach a s table situation I hope,

One of the updates the MS pushed through near the end of support for XP has a bug in it, in that regardless of whether or not it does completely install or not, it thinks it hasn't, so keeps popping up and keeps wanting to install. So that if you leave you PC unattended for a while it will run it and restart.
If I was more cynical than I am ;D I would think that they did this on purpose to persuade those who have decided to stay with XP for the time being, that they should upgrade.
As MS are not issuing anymore NEW updates for XP, I have turned off the autoupdates setting, and then once every few weeks, turn it back on briefly to catch any misc updates (like the recent patch for IE8) that do come through.
I am not on my XP pc at the mo, but when next on there, I will post the KB number of the rogue patch, so you can see if this is the one causing the issues.

Thanks Readydale :)

Well it is now more than three weeks since I posted this thread and my XP is still working OK. ;D
My first PC was when windows first came on the market 93 correct me if wrong? It had that marvelous Dos prompt C// to get it up and running. ::) Then Windows 95, then windows 97 I think? then XP then back to windows 95, then some sort of weird Windows can't remember name but absolutly hopeless. Back to XP ::) Then that marvelous windows 7 >:( Then back to XP and now we have windows 8 and 8.1 and I am still on XP. AM I addicted to it or am I just a nutter who doesn't like change?
Who reckons they have the best version?

Hi
First PC out was IBM in 1981 (ish) running CP/M via BIG floppy disks
The the PCjr for the smaller business and "home" market.
Then IBM-DOS, Windows(1) onwards to Windows 3 then 3.1
(isn't there a parallel there? rushing out a not-completely-tested OS)
There were other desktops around, Digico (StevenageHerts-made) Prince was a superb piece of kit.
(Singer-)Friden had a range including the first 1966(?) 10xcpu machine name Friden10 (no, get away with you)
ICL bought the company and renamed it the ICLSystem10.
We "all" seemed to have Compuserv email addresses 1980/81

1970's early through to 75, I was involved in semi conductor manufacture. We had a computer the size of a small office block :o It was ll tapes and lights flashing cost a bomb and now my old, very old not even a smart phone has more intelligence. My old Pc is some sort of space age nightmare to the old offrice block.
Yet with that old bit of gear (and few more little intricate bits), I hand made most of the components that went into the voyager satellites. They needed something that would last longer than 10 years, hopefully :o Well they lasted a lot longer than 10 years and have now left our solar system. My proudest achievement in life outside of my family. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Ray, have you forgotten the Olivetti Programma 101, launched in 1964?!?!
Or the IBM SCAMP, developed 1973-1983?
Commodore PET? Tandy TRS-80? (both 1977)
I used to work for ACT Computer Services - Apricot was an offshoot!
The ACT Sirius 1 was released in 1982 - using 3.5" disks (well ahead of IBM!), CP/M or DOS, and GEM (better than Windows at the time!). Also a keyboard with programmable keys!
Aah! The good old days!! ;D ;D
-
The olivetti 101 blimey, not sure it was 1842 tho.
Wasn't there an 8inch-based Sirius before the "1"?
Just given my g-son some 8inch 5inch and solid floppies.
Wish I could find my carrierbag full of gold-end IBM plugboard programming wires.
(I've found the plugboard)
I've found the 80-col 40-col cards AND edgepunched cards.
R
Have we sent them to sleep yet? :-D
-
Wot?! No mention of paper-tape?!
I started work on an IBM-360 installation, then moved a few years later to an ICL-1901 site!
At that latter site, when clearing out a walk-in safe, we found the original Operating Manual for the Leo II! ;D ;D
IBM site used punched cards (80 column); ICL site used paper-tape!

Reminded me of a fella I knew in the 1960's who worked as a very young bloke developing the language for Olivetti.... Haven't seen him since my marriage in 1970. Made lots of cash and moved to Hong Kong.

A blast from the past the Programma 101, was it not used on board the Polaris submarines? Where I worked they went from the 101 to timeshare (not a villa in Florida ;D) from a local engineering company who rented out time on their computer during the day (you could say it was a forerunner of today's cloud computing). Next was the Apple II then PCs. In the mid nineties the person in charge of computing was a dyed in the wool main framer with a distrust of PCs. PCs would be delivered with windows 3.1 which was promptly removed and Lotus 123 and Word Perfect i(both DOS based) installed.

Further to my earlier answer, the problematic patch in question is labelled "KB2862330".
To check if that is causing your problem too, click on the yellow shield in the tray (bottom right next to clock). A dialog box will come up listing any outstanding updates. If the shield isn't there, wait until it does appear.
-
Just moused over the shield and it says. "Updates are ready to be installed.?"
Neil
-
Click the shield and a dialog box telling what those updates are should appear.
Last week there was an Internet Explorer one. Today, a "Malicious Software Removal Tool update" one. Both times accompanied by the one refering to the KB number mentioned, that despite running (a number of times) still keeps appearing. It is a known problem (or deliberate depending on your level of cynicism!!)
-
Well as far as I am concerned they can sit there, I dont need to update anything cept the old girl ;D

Yes, just checked that's the one, i'm just going to ignore it :)

You may find this useful:
How to get security updates for Windows XP until April 2019 (http://www.ghacks.net/2014/05/24/get-security-updates-windows-xp-april-2019/)
It's a technical article that involves editing the Windows Registry, so it's not recommended unless you're familiar with the Windows Registry Editor. Quite naturally, also, only make any changes after you have made a full backup of your machine.
It essentially makes your 32bit Windows XP machine report itself as a Windows Embedded POSReady 2009 machine which is based on XP, but has extended support. Interestingly, a "POS" machine is a "Point of Sale" machine - essentially the kind of machine at the checkout of a supermarket, restaurant or other shop with a till with a screen.
