Hi I'm looking into my Great Grandfathers WW1 Navy Records. I've downloaded them from the National Archives but I don't really understand what ships he served on, when & where? I'm wondering if someone on here understands them a little better & could help me work it out?
Thanks for any help you can give, Craig

HMS Victory is the Portsmouth naval base so for those time periods he would have been in barracks awaiting posting. If you go to Wikipedia and enter each ship as HMS Halycon, HMS Minerva, HMS Osiris etc it gives you their service in WWI. Note often a ship's name is reused so make sure you are looking for the WWI era. For example Osiris became Osiris II [same ship]. When another ship is attached in brackets eg Minerva /Prince Palantine these would be the depot or mother ship to which the craft were attached for supplies at sea etc. The grounds of discharge column shows transfer to the next ship [or shore station eg Vic] and the final entry Demoblised.

Hi thank you very much, that explains a lot :) I wasn't sure what the ones in brackets were so that makes a lot of sence. Ill have a flick through Wikipedia & try & work out the ships he would of been on.
Thanks for your help Craig

This is the wrong way round - the main name would be the depot ship /shore base from which a flotilla of smaller vessels (the ones in brackets) were paid. In this case Osiris was an old cruiser (later renamed Osisris II) that was the command ship for a flotilla/fleet/collection of trawlers that were used for minesweeping. HMT Prince Palatine was one such trawler, I suspect that HMT Minora was another.

Thank you for pointing that out for me, I'm useless when it comes to this kinda thing! it looks like he served on a lot of requestioned Fishing trawlers, that were used for minesweaping

In the column "grounds of discharge" does anyone have any idea what the 2nd line could say? Under the word Blenheim?& also the 6th line under the word vic? I'm having trouble trying to work out what they say? Thanks in advance for any help.

Transferred is word under Blenheim and to add Attentive 111 (3) which i think is a Dover shore base.

In the rating on discharge column can anyone work out what his original rating is? Lower down it states DH which is deck hand but the top one isn't the same?
Thanks Craig
