Title: LOVELL branches
Post by: Zelley on Friday 24 June 05 18:59 BST (UK)
Aside from the LOVELL names associated with Richard III, or sailed alongside
and likely had a pint or two with Drake, Hawkins and othet Sea Dogs,
the LOVELL and LOVEL names have a long history going back
a few Centuries and more.

By the 1700's they are scattered about from  Dorset to London and beyond.  It is also believed, that the  LOVEL variation like LEE.
HART and SMITH was a popular name for the Romani when they arrived on the shores of Mother England & the Emerald Isle of Ireland.

Discussion from all Branches be it London or Weymouth or Bedford branches.

To start this Lovell interest, my family are from Shoreditch and Bethnal Green.
The earliest I have traced is;
Robert Lovell born 31 July 1670 baptised at St Sepulchre. His son Robert born 22 Oct 1715 baptised at St Annes & St Agnes. His son was also Robert born 29 Feb 1760 baptised at St Leonards.
We then had a run of 4 Thomas' before getting to myself.
I would like to find the father of Robert 1670, I think his name may have been John but I cannot prove this

I have a Louisa Lovell born 1812 in London.  She married Daniel Giles born 1806 on 08/10/1832.  She died in 1875, Daniel died in 1891. They had a daughter Matilda in 1848 birth registered in St Pancras.  A recent discovery for me to just learning about the family. Though do know that they were Romany Gypsys.

Will have a look for a Robert in my seaching and will let you know. An unusual name so hopefully not too hard to trace.

Matilda married Stephen Stone on 21/10/1867at the Parish Church, Leytonstone.  Family rumour has it that they were very religious.

I believe, the Romani ones used the LOVEL version of the name.

Would love to know more about my 4x Gt Grandmother who is buried in Wrington, Somerset.  She was a Lovell, sometimes Sarah, sometimes Seale, sometimes Cely.  She was married to Samuel Andrews on May 13 1793 in Wrington.  I don't know where she was born or when but she was buried in 1839. I have a note that she may possibly be from Churchill.
If anyone has any ideas I'd love to hear them.
thanks, Louise

Discussions about the Somerset connections would be interesting,  And, do they connect with the Dorset branches?

I have Somerset Lovell's in my tree. They are from around Ashwick, near Shepton Mallet.

The earliest one I have got is James Lovell,(I think he was roughly born around 1770) he married Dinah Burr.

They had three children as far as I know:

Job Lovell (circa. 1800)

Mary Lovell (b.1803)

Susanna Lovell (b.1794

Job married An Fear 9th June 1820, they had seven children -Mary, Ann, Dinah, Jane, Job, James, and another James. (the previous James died in infancy)

James is my Great Great Great Grandfather.

At the moment I'm trying to trace the Lovell family back a bit futher to see if the Dorset branch fits in with the Somerset on, but I have seem to hit a brick wall.

Hi..
Ive just started researching my stepdads family so havent gone very far back as yet.
But i do know his dads name was norman lovell born 1926 in Devon.
His dad was Reginald Lovell born 1900 also born in Devon.
Norman married a Beatrice Roberts born 1926 in St Agnes. I do have quite a bit on Beatrices side but not alot with Norman.
Any of these names sound familiar?

Hi Ally,
No the names don't ring a bell. My Lovells are back in the 1700's and I haven't gone forwards or back with them yet! All I know is my Lovells were from Upwey, Dorset.
Good luck with your hunting though.

I'm new here, and this is my very first post!

My Uncle is a Lovell.  He's married to my Aunt, so there is no blood connection to me, but I've done a bit of him as part of my wider tree.

I've found his great-great Grandfather, James Lovell, who was born in Wells, Somerset in 1801 and was a Carpenter's journeyman by trade.

James' son was Edwin Lovell, born 1829, also in Wells and was a Currier's journeyman (One that prepares tanned hides for use) on 1851 census.

Edwin's son was born in Gravesend, Kent in 1862, so the family must have moved, presumably for work.

It's a fascinating hobby - I've only just started, and I'm already hooked!

Hi

I have lots of Lovells in my tree - starting from a Charles Lovell who married Eleanor - he died before 1847.

I then have his two sons (maybe more....) - Charles and Edward Francis Lovell, born 1812 and 1814 in London.

Edward Francis Lovell - I have lots more information on him going right up to my husband who was born 1964.

Happy to share information if it rings any bells!!

My Lovells come from Poole, St James.

My gandad was Richard Lyell, born 1904, married Lily Matthews.  His father was William James, born 1874, married Bessie Gurd.  His father was William Edward, born 1851, married Caroline Trim.

I believe William Edward's parents were William and Maria but I still have lots to find out about them.  There were about 12 children in William and Caroline's family so there must someone out there with a connection.

Hello ..... I have Lovells in my Family Tree - Louisa Lovell, married Absalom Travers in Poole, Dorset in 1856 ..... but it appears her family may well have originated from Bridport area - her marriage certificate states her Father as Jethro Lovell but in fact, the 1851 census shows her as GRANDCHILD living with Jethro and his second wife Jane nee Fry in St James, Poole.

Quite who the parents of Jethro Lovell are, remains a mystery.

My first Lovell is George 1750-1845. He was married to Elizabeth (Weston we think). The 1841 census for Penhurst in Sussex shows he was not from Sussex - does anyone have any idea where he may have come from?

I am trying to find information about an Edwin Lovell born around 1808 probably in Wells, Somerset.

He was at Eton College, nr Windsor, leaving around 1825 at roughly 17 years old. I have information that he was later a solicitor in Wells.

I would like to know more about him - parents, family and career etc. for a book on the period.

Many thanks

Hey all,

I am looking for information on my (possible) greatx4 grandfather, John Lovell, born about 1815, married to Ann, sailed out of Liverpool in 1852 to America, arriving July 1, 1852. Children were John (b1844), Hannah (b1846), James (b1848) and Agnes (b1851). A lot of vauge internet info points towards a residence of Dorset, England.

moors you seem to have a possible connection.

Thanks, Ben
