Hi all :)
Does anyone have any advise for a novice? Basically, ive traced my family back to a Thomas Emmet who died in Thornton Bradford aged 35. I have burial records for all the 3 churches in the village and he is not buried here. I can trace hia wife, Hannah, back to 2 potential baptisms, but Thomas is nowhere. He appears on the 1841 census but dies 2 years later.
Im tempted to assume he is not from Thornton but I also cant get any information on his marriage to Hannah (Robinson) I know they married Sept 1833 but it just says Bradford.
My research has come to a complete standstill. Ive no idea where to look for him. No baptism records seem to match on Ancestry either. Of course there are lots but with no date of birth as such and no idea where he came from it would be near impossible to discover which one is mine. Im tempted to say Halifax as there are a few Emmets there but again, thats a guess.
Any help would be very much appriciated! So frustrating to get stuck! ,

The advice we used to be given was to examine the registers of every parish within a 5 mile circle, then widen the circle, if still unsuccessful. Of course, if all of these parishes are on Ancestry, you have already done that, but it's worth checking. Are there no other Emmets in the neighbourhood at all? If there aren't, it certainly looks as though he came from somewhere else. Are there any marriage witnesses among the children of Thomas who might be relatives? Are there any Emmet wills in the neighbourhood? best wishes, claytonbradley

There are only 2 death's for a Thomas EMMET on Freebmd, for the time frame you are interested in.
Dec 1844 Todmorden 21/465
Mar 1844 Barrow upon Soar 15/24
Do you already have a death certificate as this is how you know he died in Thornton Bradford?
Could he have been working away from home?
Ok found a few more Thomas EMMETT
Dec 1843 Bradford 23/143
Dec 1843 Todmorden 21/474
Dec 1844 Halifax 22/125
Dec 1844 Keighley 23/177

I think you need to be very careful, as there seem to be more than one Thomas/Hannah Emmett couple around.
E.g, in 1851 there is one at HO 107 2307 134 12
In Bradford. Eldest child aged 17
So I would say that is the couple that you have found marrying in Bradford in 1833
But it cant also be the couple where the Thomas died in 1843 age 35, that you mention.

I think you need to verify that marriage. I'm assuming you found it on Family Search. I have tried to check it via Ancestry, but unfortunately there appears to be a gap in the records for St Peter in Bradford (the only Anglican church in Bradford operating pre-1837 I believe) - the pages skip from 274 to 281 - which would cover the 1 September 1833 date. :'(
Added: I see you live in Thornton, so I would suggest a trip to Bradford Library to look at the parish registers for The Cathedral (St Peter) which will confirm the details

Hi
There is also a chance that Thomas may have been his second name or another name for him used by the family - so just may be, you should be cautious about being totally reliant on that being his given name. Perhaps there may be someone whohas a second name of Thomas or that was the family name given to males and they baptised differently?
Having looked on Ancestry there may be a bit of a gap in some of the transcribed records which might frustrate your search.

Not far away as the packhorse hikes, there are loads of Emmett/Emmotts in the Nelson(MarsdenL and Burnley (Briercliffe) areas of Lancashire - and the area is close enough to Todmorden and Halifax to be worth a look.
Exactly what information do you have on him, to help us out?
-
If you are basing his age on the 1841 census entry then you should expand his age range up to 39.
The 1841 census is the only one where ages were (supposed to be) rounded down to the nearest 5 for the over 15 year olds.

There is info from Thomas' DC on another OP post
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=682513.18
"He died in South Square at Thornton village age 35. Apparently his death cert states liver disease as cause of death but its very sad as he left a wife, a 9 year old and a 5 year old and Hannah, his last daughter was born in 1843, he died 16th october 1843."
His wife went on to remarry a Hainsworth.
So Thomas Emmet/Emmett/Emmot ( and all other possible spelling variation) was born around 1808?
With Thomas and Hannah marrying Bradford 1833? (Info from other thread). What details, witnesses, info are on this marriage register?
And as an aside, don't forget Quaker documents. While Quakerism was becoming less popular by 1830s it was big in the area earlier and Robinson is a surname connected to Quakerism. I have early quaker ancestors who start marrying outside their faith in early 1800s .... At St. Peter's, Bradford.

You may need to check baptisms later than assumed year of birth. I have come across several in my Yorkshire ancestors that were baptised with their siblings years later!
Also, as someone else has suggested - the area is pretty close to Lancashire, and depending on the work they did they may have moved around. I have recently identified an error in the tree supplied to my uncle which ignored the census records (b Lancashire) and went down a line that was born in Yorkshire - just because the person did marry and die in Yorkshire. There was only a few miles in it, but it made all the difference to where the correct records were to be found. Lancashire parish records are available online.

Hi all and thank you for all the advise. So, forst of all I have Thomas' death certificate so I know he died in the village here. I also know that Thomas and Hannah did indeed marry, as Hannahs name on her marriage cert to John Hainswprth is Emmet.
I also noticed a gap in the records at St Peters. I have bought the Cd Rom from Genuk but unfortunately it contains just burial transcripts. As interesting as that source is im afraid it doesnt help with finding Thomas!
