Hi. I am looking for information on William Stokes who married Mary Laird in Scotland. I know William was an Optician. I know that they had a child Charles Stokes who married Hughina Mckinnon in 1913 in Glasgow. I dont have any other information.
-
What year was Charles born and where was he born? The only 1891/1901 entry for a Charles Stokes with parents William & Mary shows birth 1888 Glasgow - but father was not an optician. 1891 = brass finisher and 1901 ship compass maker
Have you looked for the Stokes/Laird marriage on Scotlands People as that will give you Williams age and also his parents names and mothers maiden name

Hi
I've tracked down the birth registration of Archibald.
The certificate shows that William and Mary were not married at that time.
Tradeston
Archibald Stokes (illegitimate), 25 April 1894, 69 Dale Street, Glasgow
Parents - William Stokes, brass finisher (journeyman) and Mary Laird, housekeeper, formerly domestic servant
Both parents signed the certificate.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Archibald's marriage entry in 1915 shows William as deceased.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
William died on 8th February 1915, aged 62, at the Western General Hospital, Glasgow (usual residence 25 Garscube Lane*). He was described as a 'nautical optician' and married to Mary Laird. His parents were William Stokes, seaman and Catherine M.S McLachlan - both deceased. Cause of death was pneumonia. His son William was the informant.
* now called M'Phater Street http://www.glasgowguide.co.uk/info-streetschanged2.html
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Mary died on 9th Dec 1920, aged 62, at Ashfield House, McDougall Street, Greenock. Widow of William Stokes, optician. her parents were Charles Laird, labourer and Jane M.S. McKillin - both deceased. Cause of death was bronchitis. Her cousin Elizabeth Fleming was the informant.
I assume that brass finisher/nautical optician/optician was an occupation that involved the manufacture/maintenance of navigational optical instruments. See, for e.g. http://www.rootschat.com/links/0z3x/
Thank you so much for the information since I am new at researching my family.
Any other information anyone can give me regarding this line of my family would be greatly appreciated.
I am also looking for information on my other side of the family:
my great grandfather John Quigg who was married to my great grandmother Elizabeth Gallagher. I did find the 1911 Ireland Census. They lived at 32 Springwell St, Ballymena Town, Antrim with their children Rose and Elizabeth Quigg. Any information would be helpful.
