Title: Here's a deciphering problem for clever Rootschatters
Post by: LizzieW on Friday 18 April 14 11:38 BST (UK)
Has anyone any idea what this name is? I'm sorry that's all I've got and as it's a signature, showing other names on the list won't be of any help.  He was aged 28 in 1881, so born about 1853 in Halifax, Yorkshire.  This is from a crewlist and the people who run the lists have come up with a suggestion, but I'm not convinced.

My initial thought was Harry H Chichester but Henry does look closer

I thought the last 3 letters looked like kar, so having trawled through births of anyone called Henry born Halifax 1853 +/- 1, I think this may be  possible.

Henry Schischkar
Born June 1854
Halifax 9a 436

There is a Masters and Mates Cert for him dated 1873 on Anc...

Thank you all very much. Gold stars for everyone.

After posting my query, I just went into the garden to fill the bird feeders and 4 hours later I've just come back in  ::)  At least I've managed to cut back an old overgrown honeysuckle and found 2 clematis trying to grow underneath it.  Hopefully, they'll shoot up now.

The original suggestion was Schischitar but I agree Henry Schischkar makes more sense, especially as there is a Masters and Mate certificate for him on Ancestry.

Like Ainslie, IgorStrav, Rena and Nettie I thought it might be Henry H Chichester, but like Carol I thought his surname started with a Mc.

Enjoy the holiday weekend.
