I am completely stuck. John Bateman seems to appear in the 1841 census as John Baitman, then visiting someone, with his wife Sarah bateman. After that he does not appear in any other census, nor does he appear to die. he was born in either Asthall, Oxon or Burfoed, Oxon and his wife Sarah was born in Hailey, Oxfordshire. he was born eround 1789. can anybody make any suggestions where I look next.

Do you have the census reference for the 1841 census?
I found this one, but not sure it's the one you found?
Reference - Class: HO107; Piece: 353; Book: 13; Folio: 53; Page: 19
St Mary's Cheltenham
Ford, Ann F 30 Independent
Anderson, Sarah F 60 Female Servant
Wood, Susan F 63 Female Servant
Baitman, John M 52 Male Servant
all born out of county, except Susan Wood.
Can't see a Sarah Bateman?
-
That is the one I found. I found Sarah and the children quite separately, but also in Cheltenham. I would have assumed he had died and that she was a widow, if it hadn't been for their joint appearance on the 1851 census. She is down as Sarah Bateman (previous spelling). I assumed that he must have been at work on the night of the census - possibly a live-in servant, but again I haven't got a definite answer. Any help, advice or suggestions would be extremely welcome. I have been battling with this man for nearly 10 years!

Now we are confused, as you now say he is on 1851!!!
Can you give the ref for the 1851 sighting of him with Sarah?

I'm not seeing a John Bateman, born 1789 Oxfordshire, with a wife Sarah in 1851?
Could do with the reference - or at least the address!

The 1851 reference is Schedule 34, Piece 1732, Folio 615, Page 9. The transcription says Batemon, but the original image clearly says Bateman. They are visiting someone in Swerford Oxfordshire.

Hi Beryl
If this is the 1851 you refer to, John is an Accountant. Are you sure they are the same man?

I'm still looking at this!

That job description puzzles me too, but so much is right - age, age difference, originating from Burford and Hailey (although she is from hailey and he is from Burford). I really don't know what to think. Is there anything else I can try to ensure I have the right couple?
-
First we need to determine what will constitute the right couple. What is your interest in this man? Is he an ancestor, in which case, which of his children are you descended from, what other children did he have, have you found their births and marriages, what clues did tbey give about their parents etc? Or alternatively, is he a sideline, perhaps you are descended from a sibling of his, and found Johns christening and thought you would see what became of him, in which case what else can you tell us about his wider family, his marriage etc.
It is quite difficult to work with just an 1841 census for an apparently single person, and an 1851 census for someone who on the face of it appears to be a different man, without knowing much about the person we are actually looking for!

He is my great-great-great grandfather. I am descended from his daughter, Sarah Bateman, born 1827. He also had John Joseph 1824, George William, 1825, George-Williams 1827, Frederick 1828, Edward 1830 and Edwin 1832. He married Sarah Poulton in St Mary's Church, Witney in 1823 9th Sept). He was the son of John Bateman and Catherine Legg. This latter John was the son of Thomas Bateman and Elizabeth Rolles.
