I am trying to trace the parents of a Lettie Ward or any siblings born in Barnstaple in 1888. Lettie married a William Corney but I have no information on him his parents or any siblings.
I an new to all this and trying to do some research as a surprise for a family member. Any help would be appreciated

Hi Smurf272
Have you found them on the 1891 census?
It would appear you don't have their marriage certificate which will name their fathers.

It's all too easy to do 'speed genealogy' but you really need to back this up with proper documentary evidence such as birth & marriage certificates.
I note you're doing this as a surprise but do you have the funds and time scale to get some certificates?

There are 2 William Corneys born in Barnstaple district in 1886. I think this is the one you are looking for but you need the marriage cert to be sure.
Cladivan Cottage, Pilton
George Corney 37, retired shoemaker
Emily Corney 34
Fred Corney 12
Alice Corney 10
Edith Corney 7
William Corney 5

Thank you so much for that very quick response. I'm just trying to piece some basic information together for my partners mother. We will then start to apply ourselves by applying for birth, marriage and death cert.
thanks once again for your assistance

If you're struggling with free websites, then www.freebmd.org.uk is good for births marriages and deaths. You can search there for the reference numbers which you'll need for ordering certificates.
Check out www.fasmilysearch.org for help with the censuses
And if you don't have a subscription to any genealogy sites, check out your local library to see if they offer free access in-house to Ancestry Library Edition where you will find a whole host of other resources.

Hi milly
Smurf posted twice but hasn't been back since May 2014.
As long as their email address hasn't changed, they should receive a notification that you have posted and hopefully come back soon.
