In 1851 Michael O'Neil and Hanora Moore- O'Neil and 6 children departed Ireland for Canada. They left 2 deceased children in Ireland. One of the remaining 6 died at sea on trip. The family spent 3 yr in Canada then migrated to Montague, NY, USA where they settled and are buried. Michael 1801-1880. Hanora 1808 (or possibly 1803)-1911. Hanora's parents were Thomas and Hanora Moore. We think the wedding of Michael and Hanora would have been in Kilkenny as would the baptisms of their children and burials of the two children who died in Ireland.
We think they may have been from Kilkenny. Any Info appreciated. thanks. Francis O'Neil, Cleveland, OHIO

Frank - you should add that Hanora's parents were Thomas and Hanora Moore.

Hello from Siobhain
had a quick look as promised and this may be way off beam but try looking in Mayo. There is an important family of Moores
at Moorehall House and they are just in the process of storing all the records - I only mention it as sure enough there is an English connection and Arthur is a favourite name - many of them were famous!! in their time
I too have learnt something as I now realise that Arthur was the Christian name of the man who founded Sinn Fein - you live and learn - did Hanora keep the Moore part of her name
on purpose because it was important to her as a known family??? Also, there were Cullens at Claremorris down the road.
Do get back to me if you find anything - The Moores even have their own website - try typing in Moorehall
Nice talking to you,good luck,siobhain

Thanks for the suggestion. I don't know of any connection with Mayo, but it can't hurt to look. Hanora didn't use her Moore name, I just use maiden names to help me keep track of who is who!
-
ok
keep me posted if time - all the Irish enquiries are very interesting
siobhain
ps apparently, it was a proud boast of the Moorehall Estate that not a single estate worker died during the Famine - I think they were looked after
also, (I just cant stop can I?)........ dont forget Thomas Moores home (Jenkinstown) he wrote ,as Im sure you well know!! The Last Rose of Summer
pss Off to Ireland in Aug - will keep the names in mind, cant promise anything as might be unfair to drag Hubby and 5 children skulking round the graveyards in the (probable) rain!! Might get as far west as Claremorris, my absent-minded Dad 82 yrs thinks there may be Cullens there!!!!!
bye for now

well, i found the family this morning. It seems we were given a bad date for the departure from Ireland. I found the whole family in the records of St. Phillip's Catholic Church, Richmond , Ontario Canada in 1850. They are all lined up there in a listing for the birth of their daughter Bridget...Michael the father Hanora the mother BRIDGET the infant, with godfather Edward Cosgrove and godmother Ann Lyng. One small step, but a step nearer the "home sod" in Ireland. The web address is http://www.bytown.net/philbir.htm
-
well done francis - good for you (will still keep the moore/oneill connection in mind in Ireland in aug)
as for myself - a case of so near and yet so far.........
I found a picture of a Falloon (still living, but in England) who is the spit of my dad and apparently he was born and brought up on the Falls road in Belfast while my Dad was growing up in Dublin - the area he was told they were originally from.We would like to visit the monastery built specially for the mill girls who couldnt make the Mass at the usual parish church, because of their work, which is in the Falls.
The big question is - do we risk visiting the Falls or not when in Belfast in Aug? (The Marching Season of all times!!) So near but....
Will let you know
PS thought of another Moore! (Mary Tyler Moore show!) Am changing my rootschat time to Friday ams - maybe catch up then
Slainte,
Siobhain

To anyone following this post: I can report that my cousin located and had copied the Immigration Card of one of the subjects of this search; Michael O'Neil.
Data on the card gives his address as Montague-Lewis Co N.Y. the file reference as;File D 1458, and the Title and location of the court as Lewis Co. Supreme. Country of birth Ireland, age as 55. Date and port of arrival in U.S. as Feb. 1853 Morristown N.Y. and Date of naturalization as June 12-1860. Listed names and addresses of witnesses/sponsors F.G. Newton-Pinckney N.Y. and Martin Murphy, also of Pinckney, New York.
Unfortunately, this card does not give the date of birth as a statistic, only the age of the subject. Hoped-for information that this card also fails to provide is town or county of birth...only Country is listed.
This is, however a great piece of his/our history to now have in our possession.

Have you checked the marriage certificates of the children of Michael and Hanora, the ones that were born in Ireland. They very often have birth parishes.
Hilary

I know I don't have those documents. Frank, do you? If not, that's an excellent suggestion, thank you!
-
Marriage certificates..?? Would those be on file there in Lowville? or would they have been among the parish papers of the now defunct St's Peter and Paul parish?. I think cousin Peggy said those records were now under the care of a religious nun there in Copenhagen N.Y.
Next time we chat I'll ask her to inquire of the Sister. I did mention that she might check for Michael and familys' death certificates next time she's perusing the archives of the historical society there in Lowville. I feel those would have certain birthdates as well as parent's names and maybe hometown.
Great suggestion, thanks for the idea. Us "newbies" need all the help we can get. francisoneil

Well, drat!!. I'm up against another brick wall. I pursued the Kilkenny road because of an article written in a Copenhagen, New York publication that declared Kilkenny as the Irish origin of Hanora (Moore) O'Neil. I found in Griffith's a listing of a couple of Michael O'Neil's of the correct age and for the correct time period in Tullaroan Kilkenny. I assumed one of them would have been our ancestor.
I have been in contact with a current resident of Lisnalea, Tullaroan,60 Kilkenny, Ireland who is living in the town I thought our Michael came from. This gentleman John O'Neill has been gracious and very helpful. He polled family resources as well as met with his parish priest and together reviewed old parish records. Alas, he reports to me in a letter postmarked Nov. 1st, 05 that they were unable to verify my suspicions. It seems " his" Michael and "ours" were different people.
Correspondence with the good people in Ottawa where our O'Neil's resided prior to coming to Lewis County N.Y. indicates County Cork, County Wicklow, and County Tipperary as the origin of other O'Neil's who lived in Bytown (ottawa) at the same time as ours, and who appear to be related.
I guess that will be the next direction of search. I am not sure where to begin, as their information seems to be based on legend, as was mine. Any help will be surely appreciated. At least the current John O'Neill and a Fr. Guilfoyle of Tullaroan let me know were NOT to look. For that help I am grateful.

My great grandmother was Mary Jane O'Neil, born and baptized in the Catholic Parish of Freshford, Tullaroan County, Kilkenny, Ireland 2 May 1841. Her parents, Patrick and Julia (Delaney) were residing in Lackagrass [or Knocknagrass], a subdivision fo the townland of Courtsland at the time that she was born. Patrick and Julia O'Neil left Ireland circa 1853, coming to Montreal, Canada. Mary would have been about twelve years of age. Coming also were sisters, Catherine, Cecelia and young Julia. A cousin has found the dates of marrige of Patrick & Julia (Delaney} O'Neil [2 Mar. 1840], and the birth and baptism date of Mary and her siblings. Someday, I would like to know the ancestry of all of these people. What I am most interested in at the present, is trying to piece together Mary's life. What was life like in the Parish of Freshford, Tullaroan County, Kilkenny, Ireland, and the subdivision of Courtstown? I know that they had been suffering from the Potato Blight Famine. What were the other crops? Did some families fare better than others? Was it a close-knit community? I write short-stories about each of my ancestors, and want to be as accurate as possible. I appreciate any information that anyone mgiht be able to give. God bless. Isabel Morse Maresh -
