Title: Northfleet Kent look up requested
Post by: sandral on Thursday 03 April 14 20:18 BST (UK)
I have a Matilda Willson who describes herself as being from Northfleet on censuses. She would have been born approx 1810 give or take. However Willson may have been a married name or not. An Edward Hedgcock on a census is described as nephew also from Kent. So that may have been her name originally, or maybe not.

She is a mystery but just maybe there could be someone of these names appearing on a baptism record in Northfleet or close by in the early 1800s.  Any help would be appreciated.

The 1861 for Stepney shows her as a widow with 2 children Margaret P aged 16 b Whitechapel  Elizabeth M aged 5 b Stepney

In 1851 she has older children and is again shown as a widow.  Her lodger Henry ? Domin? in 1851 is still with her in 1861 and shown as "friend"

Are you thinking that she was never married and all children were illegitimate?

1841 for Stepney

Henry Doming/Dorning??   20

Mary Wilson   10

Providing she was CofE you can look at the Northfleet PRs on the Cityark website. Not indexed, you have to look at images one at a time.

Have just looked at Northfleet baptisms on Cityark - only 2 Matilda's baptised between 1806 and 1812 are Matilda Ann Medhurst, bp.20/3/1808, dau. of James and Mary and Matilda Paris, bp.23/45/1809, dau. of Mark and Mary.

Thanks to all of you -I know the history of the children - it's Matilda that's the mystery. Some answers may be in metropolitan archives but I was trying to get to her origins in Kent if in fact she did come from there.
