Hello Rootschatters
Another conundrum and this one is really difficult.
Have been working on George Crabtree (Gt Gt Gt Uncle) who married Emmeline Lea Harper 1858 - they had various daughters - one of which was Ida Madeline Crabtree born Bedfordshire 1863. She married John Hastings Philp on 16th March 1892 at St Mary Hulme Lancashire, however prior to this marriage in 1888 she gave birth to a son REGINALD HERBERT JONES CRABTREE - no father's name on birth certificate just Ida Madeline Crabtree. I have searched for Reginald Crabtree; Herbert Crabtree: Reginald Jones: Herbert Jones but can not find him alive or dead or with any of the foregoing names in the 1891 census, 1901 or 1911. I cannot find his death either. His birth was registered in Chorlton St Mary. His mother was not married prior to John Hastings Philp. In 1891 John Philp was a Boarder in Chorlton upon Medlock. I traced them to London in 1901 where they were in Kentish Town where the family owned an apparel making shop then in 1911 they were both in Kensington working in the shop. 1914 I found Ida Madeline had moved to America (California) and her husband was now a silk salesman (he arrived in 1913) - in the 1920 Census they have a daughter in law Margaret living with them; she noted as being Swiss, age 27 and the census shows them in Los Angeles. As there were no children of Ida and John (born that I can find) this must be the wife of Reggie? Any light that could be shed would be welcome. I thought she may had adopted the child out but if so he would still have retained his birth name - or not? Unsure of the laws of Adoption in those days. I have scoured for the child living with an aunt or uncle or grandparents but no - he seems to have disappeared. Poor Reggie.
Thank you again.

I only have access to the transcription of the 1920 US census via Family Search, but I see that Margaret is listed as Margaret Philp, which would make her the wife of one of John Hastings Philp's sons - assuming that "daughter in law" means what we take it to mean today. Surely if she was Reginald's wife, she'd be Margaret Crabtree?
Or am I missing something?

Surely if she was Reginald's wife, she'd be Margaret Crabtree?
As Reginald was only 4 when his mother married John Hastings Philp, possibly he was brought up using the name Philp rather than Crabtree?
-
It could be that his name was changed to Philp - less embarrassing etc but have trawled through Philp, Philip, Phillips and all the generic names I can think of, but still no sign of him.

I've found Ida and John on the 1911 census, living in Kensington, London.
1911 census information removed, information from the free indexes only may be posted here

PS : Off to see if I can find them in 1901 as well.

1901, Charles not with them, but have found a birth reg for a
Charles Alyn Philp, Chorlton Reg District, Q1 1893, vol 8c, p 907.

Edited to add:
There's an 8yo Charles Philp, b. Manchester, living with a [female] School Principle and some other boys in Keymer, Sussex.

STG - wonderful news, but what happened to Reggie? I wonder if Ida did not want him and gave him up for adoption? I will check marriages for Charlie and see if that sheds light - however, he was not in California in 1920 so will now have to trawl through records to see if he was (a) WW1 or (b) somewhere else in USA?
Marvellous and thank you.
-
Could Reggie be with one of Ida's older siblings, and listed on census records with their surname rather than Crabtree?

Will try that indeed but I have oodles of info on the sibs (all girls) - thank you very much.

There is a passenger list for a Lina Marguerite Philp born Switzerland and same age as the Margaret on the 1920 census, who was a British subject and sailed from Chile in 1919 to join her husband John Philp in Los Angeles. https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1942-22242-27894-79?cc=1916078 You can see the husband's name & address on the 2nd page.
Ida & John appear to be in Los Angeles in the 1930 census - https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XCV7-2QT

Thank you so much for this information. Like gold dust. As the name was spelled Philf in the 1930 census it was missed. This is wonderful information however now I am chasing John Philp born in Switzerland. So much more to search now. So grateful.

In case there was any confusion, the reference to place of birth on the passenger list would have been for Lina Marguerite, rather than her husband. Considering that she was listed as a British subject, maybe it was from marrying a British man?

You know the moment I posted that return I realised how idiotic I was and it was part of the indent for Lina. Thank you for your kind help.
