Title: Springhead/Saddleworth Baptism Leonard Clayton
Post by: mjb842 on Thursday 27 March 14 09:37 GMT (UK)
Hi there

Am stuck on the parentage of Leonard Clayton born © 1885 Springhead Yorkshire.  Everything is pointing to John Clayton but I have found a marriage Cert stating George which throws all my research out of the window.

I hope you can help me?

Regards

Hi MJB

I see that Leonard (5 b Springhead) and probable brother Harold (7 b Springhead) are with grandparents Thomas and Mary Ann Smith in Saddleworth in 1891.  If this is your Leonard, have you traced the Smiths and any marriage of a daughter of theirs to a Mr Clayton?

Obviously the birth cert for Leonard (Sep qtr 1885 or Mar qtr 1886 Saddleworth) would establish his parentage for you.  If he was orphaned young then in later life he may have been mistaken about his father's given name.

I see that YorkshireBMD shows two boys called Leonard Clayton registered in the Delph subdistrict of Saddleworth in 1885.  The first had mother's maiden name Brooks, the second Hague.

One Harold Clayton was born in the same subdistrict in 1883, mother's maiden name Hague.

Freebmd shows George Clayton and Alice Hague on the same page of marriages, Dec qtr 1877 Saddleworth 9a 437.

Really good work  ;)  I've been all over the place!

There is a death for Alice Clayton 1890 born 1859 which fits with 1881

Yes the Alice death looks likely - again registered in Delph subdistrict.

I am not easily finding the link to Thomas Smith from the 1891, though wondering whether he was a stepfather to either George or Alice.  He was widowed in 1861; remarried to Mary Ann by 1871.

Added: in 1871 there is a 12 yo daur Alice in the Smith household - wonder whether she started life as Alice Hague. 1871 ref is RG10/4333/76/24.

How about this marriage -

December quarter 1861 - Ashton Registration District 8d, page 727 - Thomas Smith and Mary Ann Hague appear on the same page.

1891 census says Mary Ann Smith born Stockport.

In 1871 Thomas and Mary Ann. Have lots of Platt children including Alice and Hannah.
There is a Benjamin Wild/e and Hannah Maria Hague marriage and Harold Clayton is with them in censuses.
Not sure where Platt comes into this puzzle.

I think they are all Hagues and one son has Platt as a middle name and they have all been dittoed.

Thomas Smith already had Platt children in 1861.  Perhaps they were stepchildren.

NB there is a Stockport-born Mary Ann Hague in Saddleworth in 1861 who looks a likely bride for Thomas, but oddly her daughter Alice is already aged 11.  Alice already has an occupation so the age can't be hugely overstated.

Yès there may be a lot of half and step siblings intermingled in that 1871 household.

In 1861 Thomas Smith has children as follows:

John Platt 19
Molly (or Mally?) Platt 13
Mary Platt 10
Miranda Smith 4
Lucy Hannah Smith 1

Walkers Lane Springhead

Mary A Hague head widow 36 yrs born Stockport
Harriet Slater daughter 17 yrs b Bugsworth Derbyshire
Alice Hague 11 yrs b Saddleworth
Samuel Hague 2 yrs b Saddleworth

Still not very straightforward

Agreed; we would expect Alice to be about aged 2 at this date.

Mmm - checked and it does say 11 - they are transposed because Samuel should be 11 yrs!

I think the family are in Walkers Lane later with Thomas

There is a Harriet Slater with her maternal Slater grandparents in 1851 in Stayley.

1849 marriage Samuel Haigh and Mary Ann Slater may be relevant
