Title: The Sainthouses of County Durham, Sheffield and Yorkshire
Post by: anglosaxton56 on Tuesday 25 March 14 12:33 GMT (UK)
Hi Everybody,
I am researching a family for a friend. Her surname is Sainthouse. Her father was Robson Dixon Sainthouse1918-1999 his father was George Kendal Sainthouse 1894-1937, his father was Paul Sainthouse 1859-1905 and his father was William Sainthouse 1826 born in Sheffield. It gets confusing now as others are saying his dad was William Senthouse 1788 married to Jane Coldwell. There is a John Sainthouse c1740 from Fishlake he must fit in there somewhere. I hope you can help Marie.
Cheers
Nigel Payne

Do you have any of these people in any census?

Just as a starting point, I searched for Paul Sainthouse in the 1861 census (you would expect him to appear with his parents if he was born in 1859), however I had no results.

There appears to only be one Sainthouse family in the 1861 (which has been transcribed as Saintham and has been corrected to Sainthouse).

I will have a look for other names you have mentioned. :)

No Sainthouses in 1851, but a couple of Sant/Senthouses. Rare name it seems.  :)

Hi,
Thanks for your help. I only found 2 families with that surname. The other being in London. I too could not find Paul Sainthouse in any censuses as a child. He first appears as an adult married with children. The suname Senthouse seems to be another family as there are lots of them.
Cheers
Nigel

It is possible that the surnames are interchangeable or perhaps had the same origins and eventually developed into variants.

Can I ask where you found the information about this family? Do you have any of the Sainthouses on any census? Do you have birth, death and marriage certificates for any or all of them?

I have the 1891 census for Paul Sainthous(Sainthouse) living in Easington Lane, Hetton-le-hole, Durham with his wife Aney and the 1901 census which has them living in Lamesly Durham with their children which includes George aged 6 who is George Kendal Sainthouse 1894-1937. This was information given to me by the family.

I found Paul Sainthouse and family in the 1901 census.

If you are certain he is one of yours buying his birth certificate will tell you both parent's names.

If you are unsure which William Sainthouse is his father, depending on the age of William's wife, I would guess that a 33 year old (ie the one born 1826) is more likely than a 71 year old (ie the one born 1788) to father a child born in 1859. But ... stranger things have happened. ;)

Yes, I noticed that Free BMD has Paul Sainthouses marrying Ann Dodds.

I must say it is difficult to work out who is who on your list of names - tis a bit confusing in parts. I am signing off now - maybe someone else can help you further.

Researching Catherine Stewart who married George Kendall in 1866 in Hetton le Hole.
I could only find Catherine and George (surname Kendle) in 1901 & 1911 census in Easington Lane. Eventually found them in 1871 & 1881 census as Senthouse, and 1891 census as Sainthouse.

George was baptized in 1846, Crane Moor Nook, Thurgoland, Yorkshire, son of Ann Kendal.

I can't find a marriage but Ann's husband was William Sainthurst/Sainthouse. There son was Paul, born abt 1858, in Yorkshire.
The family are in Hetton le Hole by 1861.

Ann Kendal's father was Paul Kendal who moved from Yorkshire with the family.

HI,

A possible marriage for William and Ann,

William SENTHOUSE    Dec Q 1847    Sheffield    22  554
Ann KENDALL with same ref.

The family are in Thurgoland in 1851, they have been transcribed as SAINTHURSH at Ancestry and SAINTHURST at FindMyPast. You might already have this but let me know if you need a transcription.

Regards,
Daisy
