Hello all
I am looking for Austin ROVANE and Catherine Clancy (CLANCHY)
Austin b c 1830, Parents, Michael ROVANE/Ann FLYNN
Catherine b c 1841, Parents, Michael CLANCY (CLANCHY) Ann CAFFRAY
These dates are according to their marriage certificate Australia 1863.
Both born in Mayo and Parents of both were Farmers.
Only Irish information needed all covered at this end.
Can't find hide nor hair of them in Ireland or on Immigration to Australia. any assistance would be very welcome.
Thank you
Regards
Kate

A search of The Tithe Applotments 1834 shows a Widow Ruvane in Kildermots Glebe Thorin in the parish of Attymass Co Mayo.
A search of Griffiths Valuations 1856 shows a Patrick and Anne Rovane in the parish of Bekan,Cloonbookeighter ,Co Mayo
Irish Civil registration which started in 1864 in Ireland shows the surname only as Ruvane.
So most likely the name is originally Ruvane and is unique in Ireland to Mayo.
-
Griffiths Valuations also show a Michael Clancy in Bekan with two plots of land in 1856.

I've come across the surname Rovane (and Rivane / Ruvane) several times before in connection with Mayo and while I can't remember why I was looking at that surname - my notes will be long gone - I do remember strongly concluding that it was an alternative to / associated with / derived from Ruane.
Which takes you a step back, for Ruanes in Mayo were plentiful. But I thought I would mention it anyway as a possibility in your search going forward.
-
I also notice a 26 year old Irishman Austin Ryan (as transcribed on Ancestry.com) who arrived Melbourne 24 December 1861 from Liverpool on the "Queen of India"? Possibility?
-
I can't find a specific birth/baptism for Catherine Clanchy/Clancy but a search of the RootsIreland website Baptismal/Birth index for County Mayo provides the following hits against Bekan Roman Catholic parish for father "Michael Clancy" and "Ann Caffrey" (though I have to say I don't know how the RootsIreland website interprets the names I inputted on my search):
Mary Clancy 1842
John Clancy 1844
Ann Clancy 1845
In the ballpark for now as Catherine's siblings, only just worth noting until you can rule out.

I done a bit of googling on Bekan Parish turns out Church registers available on microfilm for 1832 to 1910.

Morning all
Thank you very much for all this information, it did occur to me that the name could be different from Rovane as I was having so much difficulty in finding the name anywhere.
This gives me something to work with, I have a friend who has access to FindMyPast, I know the Tithe records are there. Will also check out RootsIreland for other records Clancy/Caffray, siblings sounds likely.
I will also try to check Newspapers for passenger list "Queen of India" as the names are often wrong.
Very much obliged to all.
Thank you
