Title: Priscilla Davies in Wrexham workhouse 1881
Post by: svb111 on Monday 24 March 14 20:43 GMT (UK)
I am seeking more information about Priscilla Davies and her son William Henry Davies.
Priscilla is 18 years old and  in Wrexham workhouse on the 1881.
Her son is born in the workhouse on  6 July 1881 (no father's name given.)
I know nothing about Priscilla's family so I am stuck.
I can not find either one on the 1891 census
William married Violet Bell in 1907 and know his details from there to his death in 1967.
Please can anyone help or advise as to where to go from here?
        Thanks SVB

Sorry - there were 2 Priscilla Davies in Wrexham - of the same age- the one who married Henry, b. Welshpool and the one in the workhouse, b. Broughton   :(

Back to the drawing board.

I think your Priscilla is in Gwersyllt in 1871 - mother was Mary

Ref - RG10/5654/118/40

(Siblings have mixed birthplaces!)

Just a comment on some online trees which have priscilla born Great Broughton, Chester. In the 1881 she is down as Broughton, Denbighshire. This is likely to mean Pentre  Broughton, Wrexham, close to Gwersyllt. See this map:

 http://www.rootschat.com/links/0ymz/

The 1871 has her born Wigan  and her sister, Hannah, b. Southsea - which is again close by. If she was less than 3 when the family moved back from Lancashire, it might well be that she though she was born Broughton. Moss is next door to Broughton.

Added - note the 3 year old brother, William Henry Davies, on the 1871.

Seems she is still unmarried in 1883.

The Wrexham Advertiser April 21, 1883
School Board Cases. Priscilla Davies find 5s for neglecting to send her child to school.

The Wrexham Advertiser, June 09, 1883
Wrexham School Board. Special attention was made to the case of William H Davies, the son of Priscilla Davies , Mount Street ( and other children)  inasmuch that the children were habitually absent from school and parents seemed to have no control over them.

The Wrexham Advertiser December 28, 1888. Just to eliminate this one .
Inquest into Margaret Davies aged 13, lived at 2 Nile Cottages.  Hightown. Mother Priscilla Davies is the widow of Thomas Davies.

Gadget, I too thought Priscilla married Hollamby but then found this incorrect.
I can see why you think the 1871 could be her. William Henry married and died in Blackrod which is a stones throw from Wigan. Did the family have some connection here?
The 1861 has Priscilla aged 9 but all the siblings ages match. I wonder if this Priscilla died and another daughter was named Priscilla?
If I could find her and William Henry on the 1891 it could help.

Wilcoxon,  I was really excited when I first read your information as it all seemed to fit but as William Henry was born 1881 ( I have the certificate) I doubt he would be at school in 1883.
What it does show is that there was more than one Priscilla with a son called William Henry.

Thanks to you both for your input as I need all the help I can get.       SVB

Hi

There is a Priscilla Davies dying Wigan the year after, if I recall correctly - I checked before putting up the census details.
As I said, I'm sure this family has been discussed before but so far I've not found it via Search.

I think that the mother, Mary, might well have also called herself Priscilla - memories of that other thread are coming back to me - no time to search for it though.

PS - I discounted the Hollamby one very early on.
