A baptism of Frederick Andrew Shy, father George, mother Lene (as marriage found by gaffy). Perhaps Lene/Helen was the same person.

There are quite a few of us on RC with ancestors who were German pork butchers, so much so that there is a database which lists those who people are researching http://surname.rootschat.com/lexicon/dbsig/index.php?dbsig_name=German+Pork+Butchers
There is also a thread dedicated to German pork butchers, and several of the people on the thread are incredibly knowledgeable about this subject http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=408853.msg5142422#msg5142422
And welcome to RC!!!

1891 census states George Shy was born in Wurttemberg, Germany. His wife is listed as Magdelene she was born in the same town.

Wow, I am overwhelmed with the super fast responses to this post. I think the Lena Krafft marriage is my George. I believe they came from Wutterburg in 186something. I have heard that she was a princess of sorts although i cannot confirm this. They married in Yorkshire and had a child george in 1868, I also think that they had a son Charles out of wedlock earlier. Any help would be super. Thank you. Sarah

Has the name been Anglicised as Shy doesn't sound very German? My German ancestors did that with their names, changing Georg to George and Anna Maria to Annie Mary.
-
I also think that they had a son Charles out of wedlock earlier
According to 1881 census, Charles was born in Germany in 1865 (out of wedlock as you said). So the family must have arrived in England between 1865 and 1867 when they married.

Georg was most probably Scheu in Germany. You could look if there are naturalization papers available.

Here are some Scheu/Shy trees, seems your Georg is there as well.

Not sure if you can see the lists without registering.

The Mormons have films of the Church books. You can order them at their History Centers. They also have family books.

I'm wondering whether women travelling as part of a family group aren't shown on the passenger lists? I'm having the same problem as you, I can find my great grandfather but not his future wife. I know the approximate date she must have arrived, but there doesn't appear to be any record for her or her sisters. Family folk law said they met on the boat coming to England, I'm not sure about that, although as they came from the same town they probably knew each other. They definitely married here though.

Groom, that is interesting and may be possible, worth investigating. I know that documents are not always very accurate but it says that george's application date was Oct 1863 but the 1881 census says that son Charles was born in Germany in 1865.....did it take a few years for the application to be approved .....they married in Goole in 1867. I will investigate more at the weekend

Hello,
It seems your George Scheu had an older brother. There's a Ferdinand Friedrich Scheu of Künzelsau in the rootschat pork butcher database. Ferdinand Friedrich lived in Bradford. He was probably the pacemaker for his younger brother in the trade.
Find him with the following link: http://surname.rootschat.com/lexicon/dbsig/dbsig-quick-search.php?dbsig_num=1&letter=S&view=709
I would like to encourage you to put your George also into the database.
Best wishes
