Hi Eddie

Specifically, what information are you looking for?

For example, have you found him on the 1880 census?

Do you know who he married and when?

He was my wife's great grandfather and married Mary Doran in St Helens in  Lancashire1870, he promptly shipped out to America leaving her pregnant and was never seen again. Any information would be appreciated.
regards

Eddie

You maybe looking in the wrong country. The passenger list for James Stokes in 1870 in which it states a birth of c 1847 gives a destination of Canada.

Regards
William Russell Jones.

He left from Liverpool on the ship "James Foster Jr".His date of arrival is given as the 29th of July 1870,my apologies for my post, his birthyear is in fact given as c 1849.

Hi Eddie,

There is a small online tree for James which gives his birthplace as Scotland. Is that a possibility?

The ship the James Foster Jr. appears in number of articles in the New York Times. This one from
1870 about the awful conditions for the passengers.

Perhaps, it wasn't a good crossing for James! ;)

Cheers,
DB
