Title: Hickman Family - again
Post by: gillianR on Sunday 23 March 14 13:03 GMT (UK)
Hi All,

I am trying to find James Hickman born c. 1848 Wolverhampton, Staffs,
on the 1891 Census.

I have him on the 1881 Census thus:
1881 Census from Ancestry.co.uk

James Hickman    Head   M   Age 33   Occ; tin plate worker   Born Wolverhampton Staffs

His wife Ann was born c. 1843 which ties in with her death.
Death of Ann from Free BMD

HICKMAN    Ann    32     Dudley    6c   57
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Not sure about the marriage I found in 1867 on Free BMD
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The 1891 Census I found, does not tie in with the other Census returns listed below, even though James is down as a Widower, and the occupation does not seem right either.

I do not have the GR Number as this was found for me by a friend.

1911 Census
James Hickman   Head   Age 62   M   Occ:   Iron Gate Worker       Born Birmingham
Elizabeth Hickman   Wife   Age 49    M 12 years 2 children 2 living         Born Wolverhampton
William Kirby    Son   Age 23   S   Occ: Striker (A Blacksmiths Helper)   Born Birmingham
Ernest Hickman   Son   Age 11                  Born Birmingham
Address: 2 Back of 27 Curzon Street, Birmingham

I have the RG number but I do not think I can put it in!!!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
I am presuming James re-married due to an Elizabeth being on the 1901 and 1911 Census, and this was the only marriage I could find:
Marriage from Free BMD 2nd Marriage.
Marriages Mar 1897   (>99%)
Hickman    James        Birmingham
Lovett    Jane Elizabeth      Birmingham
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have noticed on the 1901 that some of the children should be STEP children to James, due to their ages and the length of time James and Elizabeth were married (1911 Census) 12 years.

Also you will notice there is a William Kirby on 1911 Census, whom I think would be Elizabeth's son from a first marriage??

I am wondering if she married James in her Maiden name of Lovett, and that her first husband was named Kirby, in fact John Kirby. I found them on an earlier Census.I also found a death for John Kirby.
~~~~~~~~-
This has followed on from my first problem with Thomas Hickman born c.1884 and who married Mary Ann Evelyn Fletcher.
I have the Birth certificate for Glady May Hickman born 1920, who was his daughter, which proved that Mary Ann Evelyn Fletcher was indeed her mother.
~~~~~~~~--
I have found a marriage certificate for the said Thomas Hickman married to Mary Ann Evelyn Fletcher Sept 9th 1911, and on it his father is James Hickman.

~~~~~~~~
So, where is the James Hickman I want in 1891??
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have told you everything I can about what I have etc, hopefully to give you an insight to the Family Tree.
Thanking you in a LOT of anticipation:)
I remain
Very Respectfully
Gillianr
Hi Jan57
I don't suppose you could find the marriage of James Hickman and Elizabeth Foster/Kirby.
He would have married her between 1891 and 1901, and according to the 1911 they were married for 12 years, which makes it about 1899 when they married.
I can;t seem to find anything for them.
Many thanks
Gillianr
Jackie
Thanks for that, but have to admit, have not yet checked for Ernest Hickman.
I have just realized I can't find the marriage for James Hickman to his first wife Ann. either.
Mary Ann Cook Walsall in 1867 or Ann Maria W Ross  Walsall in 1867.
Those are the only two.
Don't know if you could find anything else.
Hi Jan57
Thanks for that marriage, but I am afraid buying the cert will be down to my sister in law.
Did anyone find anything on his 2nd Marriage to Elizabeth??
Thank you Jackie,
Yes, I do feel that the 1872 marriage you found for James and Anne is the correct one,
and that James's fathers' name is Charles.
Charles is on the 1861 and 1871 and they do follow through as being correct.
Many thanks
Hi Again.
I am referring to the 1891 Census for William Hickman and Wife Pamela, and their children.
RG12; Piece: 2233; Folio: 33; Page: 22;
One of the children Mary Ann born c. 1875 age 16, is the one I am asking about,
because on the 1901, William Hickman is down as a widower,and I found his wifes death in 1899.
1901 RG12; Piece: 2233; Folio: 33; Page: 22; shows a Mary Ann Hickman age 8,whom  I suppose
could have been born before her mother died in 1899, as this Mary Ann Hickman was born 1893.
The problem I have is trying to find the First Mary Ann Hickman on the 1901. I thought she may have died seeing as how another child was given her name, but I cannot find a death, nor a marriage, or on any other census returns:)
Can you please help again?:)
Many thanks
Gillianr
   I think Mary  Ann Hickman b 1875  married ,   and  possibly  the Mary  Ann b 1893   could be   her  daughter  ,  and William  /Pamela took  her  in .  There were quite a few    incidences where grandchildren were  passed  off as children  ,  especially if they  were born out  of wedlock
Mary Ann Hickman registered Mar qtr 1893 Wolverhampton RD
ref 6b 669
Other names on the page:
 Mary Ann Hickman
 William Leadbetter
 Mary Elizabeth Spriggs
 Jeremiah Walton
 Jeremiah Watton
Hi Jan 57
I think perhaps you could be right regarding the young Mary Ann.
I did find those alternative marriages on BMD, but the Jerimiah Walton one I read as Water/s,
so obviously could not find anything. I will re-check.
Many thanks again for your help
Hi Gillian, I'm doing some research for the BBC on a geneology item and I'm looking into the Hickman family.
I'm particularly interested in John Hickman born 1885. It says on the notes I have that he was born in Bletchingdon, Oxfordshire. Bletchingdon isn't too far from Birmingham and I was wondering if  the John Hickman you've mentioned in your first post could be the same?
Sorry for contacting you out of the blue, just thought it would be great if we could make the connection!  :)
Hannah
Hello Hannah
The only 'John Hickmans' I have are as follows;
John Edward Hickman born c. 1852 Darlaston Staffs
John E Hickman born c. 1880 Pretoria, South Africa.
John T Hickman born c. 1911 Dudley Staffs
John Owen Hickman born c. 1870 Sedgley Staffs
John Hickman born c. 1894 Birmingham.
Most of the Hickman family appear to have come from over the 'Black Country' way, ie: Staffordshire, so I am afraid I cannot help you, which I regret.
I have not done any research on this family for a very long time anyway, and rest assured, I have no problem with you coming to me 'out of the blue' :)
Bletchingdon does appear, to me anyway, to be quite a way from Birmingham, but I do hope you can sort your John Hickman out.
Have you tried searching members on Ancestry?
Best of luck anyway
Regards
Gill Reynolds
Hello Hannah and Welcome to Rootschat
I'm presuming that you have the census details for the above in 1891 census?
John Hickman 1885 Bletchington Oxf. parents Thomas + Mary Ann.
Thanks Gillian and Jackie for getting back to me.
I didn't have that census information so that's great! I'm fairly new to this, we're trying to track down any ancestors that John Hickman might have, any research suggestions would be greatly appreciated!  ;D
