I am looking for a W J Wheeler born in late 1928 in Fermanagh Ireland and moved to Canada at some time during 1950's. I don't know if he has passed therefore having only included his initials, his nickname was Billy. I don't have any idea about how to look for information on him. Therefore I'm asking for advice on how to go about it.

Good afternoon ajw,
Do you know where WJ Wheeler settled in Canada? That would help since many things are done by province - for instance, vital records are done that way. Ontario and British Columbia seem to be most accessible. I would start with a search of the cemetery sites such as find-a-grave as well as ocfa/bcfa sites. Hope this helps.

No sadly I don't. I have no idea either where he departed or arrived from.

Hi ajw,
I would start looking and incoming passenger lists for places you think he may have gone to. I am not sure whether or not Scotland had a burial location site? If you go into the Rootschat chat room there are others from Scotland that may be able to provide you with some help as well. :-)

I believe he lived in Toronto at some point as a family member visited him there. Wheeler went on a special deal that was for £20 and would on a farm for two years as part of it in the late 1940's not 50's. Was there ports that did regular crossing as part of the deal or anything?

Hi,
Passenger Lists to Canada on the subscription site ancestry cover 1865 - 1935 which unfortunately doesn't help you.
There is a W J Wheeler (and Mrs P Wheeler) showing on the Canada Voters list 1968 - 355 Bell Size Don-Valley - Occupation School teacher.

Canada voters List 1957 also shows a W J Wheeler (also a Mrs W J Wheeler with him) - Kingston, Ontario, Canada - Occupation Foreman
You can see what limited information is given. It would be hard to know if it were your W J Wheeler ???

HI ajs,
There is an outgoing passenger list for the UK as well, but not sure if they cover the right time period for you. I would guess that he sailed either to St John, Quebec City or Montreal ports of entry. But, there is a possibility he may have gone through a USA port (ie new York or Philidelphia) and then crossed the border into Canada.

I've since found out his boat left from Cobh, Queenstown, County Cork.
