Title: Hit brick wall on John Simeon b 1781
Post by: cdemo on Wednesday 19 March 14 04:57 GMT (UK)
Hi there.  I have hit a brick wall with John Simeon b 1781.  Birth year is not confirmed with any proof. I am looking for his birth records and his father's name.  From what my cousin has gathered his father's name is Francis Simeon b. 1766 who fathered John at the age of 14 but I am unsure if this information is correct.  Any help in this matter is Greatly appreciated!
Cathy

Can you tell us what led you to John Simeon, and how you estimated his year of birth?

Also, how sure are you that he was born in Lancashire? (a quick glance on Familysearch does not find him or a Francis Simeon in Lancashire, though the surname could have variants).

Are you  talking about John Simeon , married to Jane Bell, St Peter Liverpool, 1803,
John appears as a customs officer and later a book keeper,

Yes, he was married to Jane Bell. His year of birth came from my cousin's tree that he has been working on but I don't know where he got that information from nor can I find anything to confirm the date or place of birth.  That is my brick wall.   His son, Peter David is my GG Grandfather.  I have seen the reference to John being a bookkeeper on his marriage information but I have not seen the reference to him being a customs officer.  Thank you for looking into this for me.

Hi,

He was an Officer of Customs on his marriage in 1803 to Jane Bell.  On John Alexander, Grace and Peters baptisms in 1812 he was a Book keeper.

I'll have to take another look, thank you.  Can anyone give me advise on where to look for John's parents next?

This is just a point of possible interest --- in the parish burial records on Find My Past -- there are several burials of people named 'John Simeon' -- in the years leading up to 1781 --- in Glamorganshire.

I can't see an obvious baptism for him though -- but it made me wonder if he was born in Wales.

Liverpool was a place to where Welsh people migrated.

Thats a good thought Pennines.  There is also the possibility of Ireland  ::) . On the 1841 census there is an Alexander Simeon aged 40 born Ireland living in Liverpool.  May be some relation  :-\

Just to throw some additional thoughts in, his surname could have be transcribed/misheard as Simon or possible Simmon, Simmons to name, but a few.  For instance his daughter Margaret was baptised in 1804 under the surname Simmons.

13th April 1806 St Nicholas, Liverpool
Margaret Simmons, Daughter of John Simmons & Jane (formerly Bell)), His Wife
Born on 3rd March 1806
Abode Newbird St.
Occupation Book Keeper

There is a death of a John Simmons in the Workhouse, Book keeper on 6th November 1821 at St. Johns, Liverpool aged 40.  It is possible that this is the record your cousin found to work out his year of birth.   Also buried at St. Johns was a Jane Simon aged 50 on the 8th June, 1828.

Definitely a tricky one.

Alexander may definitely be a family connection --- as John Simeon gave one of his children the middle christian name of Alexander --- it wasn't the most common name.

Mosiefish,

May I ask, when you found the birth of Margaret Simmons, what did you search for?  Did you search all the spelling possibilities of Simeon or did it come up as a possible match just being close in the name with John and Jane being listed as the parents?  I guess it would do me good to know what site you found it on too.  I am on a learning curve here and I am finding that people I eventually find probably should have come up in earlier searches and searching for variations of the surname has opened up a whole new can of worms for me.  :)

Try  http://www.lan-opc.org.uk/
Brilliant site for Lancashire baptisms, burials and marriages. I think one or two of your Simeons/Simmons are on there.

I may have found something in regards to my search.  Please see photo.   Can anyone tell me more about "Abode - Barnaker"?

Also, here is the exact wording in the Liverpool Gazette Aug 20th 1781 (spelling mistakes and all):

Fourteen year old boy fathers son.  A Boot Boy employed by well seated squire is claimed to be the father of a son born to a maid sevant.  On insruction she was removed from her employ to an unknown home.  The boys father was a Foot Man at the same address. The baby was named John Simeon and the father Francis Simeon. The mothers name was not recorded. Baby John is to be passed to family being that the mother left the home without the baby and it is not known where she resides.

Can anyone tell me what a Boot Boy and Foot Man is?
