Title: Some difficult to place lawn tennis players (circa 1910-30)
Post by: newmark401 on Tuesday 18 March 14 17:02 GMT (UK)
I'll add a short list of female lawn tennis players about whom it is very difficult to find out anything, including their first name(s) and places of birth. I'm just looking for some very basic biographical information on each of them (date and place of birth death, plus any marriage details):

E.H. Berthoud - possibly born in India (played at Wimbledon in 1920)
--

Mrs S.E. Charlton - played at Wimbledon in the 1920s; appears to be the wife of player Samuel Ernest Charlton (1882-1962)
--

Mrs J.L. Colegate - played at Wimbledon and elsewhere in the 1920s; could have been British
--

Mrs R.R. Jackson - played at Wimbledon and elsewhere in the 1920s; might well have been Irish
--

Mrs Bruce May - active circa 1920-25; could be Mrs Bruce-May
--

Mrs J.B. Perrett - played at Wimbledon and elsewhere circa 1910-25; sounds French, but could have been British
-----

Any help would be appreciated.

Mark

Mrs E.H Berthoud could be the wife of Edward Henry Berthoud CIE, OBE 1876-1955.

Times obit (June 27 1955) of EHB says he was born 13 September 1876. (There is a birth registration in West Ham). Married Phyllis Hamilton Cox in 1908. She was the daughter of GWS Cox of the Indian Police.

Hi Mark,

Mrs S E Charlton could be a lady called Hilda Seed.
There is a marriage in 1905 between a Samuel Ernest Charlton and a Hilda Seed at Omskirk, Lancashire on www.freebmd.org.uk.
There is also the birth of a Peggy P Charlton at Omskirk in 1913 with a mother's maiden name Seed on the same site.
Plus I found this relating to Peggy Charlton/Lister who seems to have been a tennis player - http://www.tennisforum.com/showthread.php?p=25477658
It all adds up , I think.
Quite appropriate a tennis player called Seed :P
Looby :)

Mrs J.L. Colegate appears to have also played golf and was collected to Walton Heath which puts her in Surrey.

 - makes this a possible marriage in 1933 for a son of hers.

Robert Russell Colegate, the son, was b. in 1911. His parents were Jessie Lagar/Lager Russell and Robert Pearce Colegate.  Robert Pearce Colegate died in 1936 in the UK but Jessie moved to Western Australia where her son was living and lived until 1967.
