Hi,
Does anyone know where I might obtain copies of the registers for 1800-1825? BMSGH don't seem to cover this period and I have been unable to find anywhere else on the net. I am looking for the baptism of Thomas Hinks b1813 and his brothers Joseph b1817 and Samuel b1821. I think his mother was called Ann and there will almost certainly be other siblings.
Any help would be gratefully received,
Brian

Try www.freereg.org.uk There are sedgley all saints on there but the hinks on there are late 1700's. To check coverage look at the counties page, Staffordshire that is and then press s for sedgley and sedgley all saints is near the top of the page.

Thanks for the info but freereg coverage doesn't include the years that I am interested in. No doubt they will do so eventually.

I thought I might have been on to something with Sister Sarah AXSON on the 1851 Census with Thomas/Susannah Hinks.
But she must be Susannahs Sister.
Sarah WALTERS married George AXHAM, 27 Sept 1830, St Peters, Wolverhampton.
Susanna Walters was a Witness.
Are you sure Joseph 1817 and Samuel 1821 were Thomas's Brothers?
I followed Joseph Hinks on Census and 1871 a Simcox Family is with him. Thomas S is Josephs deceased Wifes Cousin.

This is all very useful information and I thank you.
No I cannot be sure that Joseph and Samuel were brothers of Thomas Hinks. However Thomas and Susannah Walters(Hinks) are in Scotland at the time of the 1841 census, in fact several of their children were born there. Next door to them in the 1841 census is Ann Hinks aged 50 and Samuel Hinks aged 10. In 1851 census a Joseph Hinks who was born in Coseley has a widowed mother called Ann aged 62 and a brother Samuel aged 20 living with him (HO107/2025/421/15). These seem to be the same Ann and Samuel. I need to find their baptisms and the only option seems to visit Stafford Record Office!!

I did find Thos and Family in Scotland in 1841 Census.
I didnt see the others though.
There has to be a connection;
1841 in Scotland we have;
Willm Crowther 30
Mrs Crowther 30
Margt Crowther 11
Willm Crowther 9
Susannah Crowther 7
Joseph Crowther 5
Ann HENKS 50
Samuel Henks 10
Mary Ann and William CROWTHER were Witnesses to the Marriage of Joseph HINKS and Sarah SIMCOX
Possible Marriage 1 Feb 1829, Dudley, Staffs- Mary Ann TURNER and William CROWTHER
-
OK, got it now, took some searching though;
Joseph Hencke 34
Sarah Hencke 36
Ann Hencke 62
Samuel Hencke 20
So Marriage of Joseph has Father as SAMUEL and we now know (and you were correct) his Mother was Ann.

Well done you that moves us both on a generation. Still need to get baptisms for Thomas and brothers Joseph and Samuel. Looks as though only option on this is a trip to Stafford or an order from Familysearch followed by a trip to their local centre.

Sedgley records are now kept at Dudley Archives (now next to Black Country Living Museum), after the parish moved to Worcester diocese in 1993. (I've tried to get Genuki amended.) Most of them have to be read on microfilm, if available; copies also at Wolverhampton Archives and elsewhere. But there's a lot of nonconformity in the area (including Catholicism, and Quakers and Baptists who don't do infant baptism but record births in other ways), and for around 1780-1820, many baptisms that 'should' be there, aren't found anywhere. The population increased exponentially, especially in the Coseley area, a good distance from the parish church. There was also a tax on baptisms, therefore some families went out of their parish to one where the priest refused to be a tax-collector. Others didn't bother at all, apparently. Nightmare. NB the Sedgley incumbent 1779-1813, John Best, was 'perpetual curate' of St Leonard's, Bilston, which in turn was a chapelry of Wolverhampton collegiate church. I think he employed a curate at Sedgley.
PS Brian - if you're after Swindells, does that include Thomas Greenall Swindell, vicar of Sedgley 1888-1929?

Many thanks for the info looks as though I will have to visit Dudley.
My Swindells are from Macclesfield area c1717 unlikely to be connected.
