Title: How to Download a WW1 File from Archway
Post by: Elizajb on Tuesday 18 March 14 11:25 GMT (UK)
Hi All,

Archives NZ have recently changed the way in which records are digitised and the following information explains how to download the WW1 files under the new system (I had a bit of bother so I asked them). I thought this may be of use to others.

HOW TO DOWNLOAD A WW1 MILITARY FILE FROM  ARCHWAY
                                 (Information from Archives New Zealand)

1. The viewer doesn't seem to work very well with the latest version of Internet Explorer, so NZ Archives recommend customers  view records through Archway using Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox browsers.

2. After clicking the person's name under 'Digitised Record', the new viewer displays the 'Preservation Master' files on the left as a list. If you click on the triangle to the left of the label, this should retract the list and display another label, 'Derivative Copy'.

3. Click on that name to show the single image called 'Table of Contents'. This is actually the PDF. Click the words 'File 1' under the PDF box shown and the PDF file will load.

4. Click the download 'arrow' in the upper right of the black toolbar and you can 'save' the full file.

Regards Eliza.

You're welcome.

It  a nice change to be a little useful to someone else after all the assistance I've had from others on this site.

Regards Eliza.

This appears to have disappeared from the current website. The Derivate Copy I mean.

Archway seems to be very slow at the moment, and was impossible over Easter for looking at WW1 records.

Mmmm, that's strange.

I've just had a look to see if I can still get my William David Marquet file on Archway and I am able to.  I wonder why it's not working from your end. Is anyone else having bother with it?

Regards Eliza.

Ooops, it was - now it stops loading half way through.   Will have to wait another day to try again.

Hi, I have just found a newly scanned record of a relative.  When I follow these instructions at step 2, there is not a "Derivative Copy" label.  Just multiple pages of the file.  I can download each page individually and these are saved as a JPEG 2000 format.  They can be reformatted to 'regular' and more user friendly jpeg format in software such as Photoshop.  Pity that the file doesn't come as one PDF as previous records did for me.  Messier.

Hi Bruce,

I've just checked the few files that I have and they are still working ok, still getting the derivative copy etc, and can download as a single PDF -  but some do seem to be having trouble with it and I don't know what causes that I'm afraid, whether it's a glitch in the system perhaps.

Hi Bruce,

I've just had a look at the Archives search page and you're right. There's a fair sized message on the page that you enter name of your person into, which explains that at the moment, there is a mixture of file types within the digitised records. Some have been converted to PDF and some haven't and are in the single page format. This has apparently been done to speed up the process of getting all the records digitised and once the digitising has been completed, Archives are going to go back and convert the single page formats to include a PDF file. They offer an apology for the inconvenience to those who have currently only got the single page records.

It sounds as if you will eventually get a PDF file but it might be a wee while.

Regards Eliza.
