Hello,
I am having trouble trying to find any information on Athol Bruce Mitchell. b. 12.07.1920. I am unable to find him. His parents are William Henry Mitchell b. 1877 England & Kathleen (Florence) b. 1880 Stonehaven, Aberdeenshire. He married Margaret Edith Connell in 1944 on the Isle of Man and was in the Canadian Army. Any information or assistance anyone could offer would be greatly appreciated.
kind regards,
Bumble ???

Was he born in Canada or elsewhere?

Hello Carol,
He was born in Canada. All the other siblings I can find births for and they are York, Ontario.
Many thanks,
Bumble

Assuming I have found the correct family, this looks like them in 1921 ..... District Toronto South (133) Sub-district Ward 4 (14)
The family name is down as Henry instead of Mitchell. Address is 56 Stewart St (I think).
William Henry 44 b. England arrived 1891
Kate Henry 41 b. Scotland arrived 1892
William Henry 19
Helen Henry 17
Kathleen Henry 15
Norman Henry 13
Evelyn Henry 10
Audrey Henry 8
Bruce Henry 1
Annie Florence Mother-in-law 63 b. Scotland
All children were b. in Ontario.
The writing is not too clear but William Sr's job appears to be Presser in a Tailor Shop and Silhouette Artist appears to be written above.
You can apparently access the 1921 census for free through Ancestry. There is further info available on the image.

Hello Polarbear,
Thank you so much. This is the correct family as William was a silhouette artist. William's name was William Henry Mitchell. Katherine maiden name is Florence. Once again thank you.

You are very welcome. Pleased to be able to help.
If you have access to Ancestry Canada records, there is a comprehensive tree related to this family to be found therein.
Do you have info for the family going forward? Some members can be found in the Canada voter's lists on Ancestry. William's death is also there, and a marriage or 2 for the children. Due to privacy laws, marriages are only currently available to the public up to about 1928 or 9, with a new year released annually.
If you don't have world Ancestry access, your local public library may subscribe to Ancestry Library Edition, which would give you access to the Canadian records, including images. Not sure about the trees, however.

Hello Polarbear & Sandra,
Many thanks for all your input and yes I have worldwide membership on Ancestry. I should of known to look under Henry although I had tried Soundex on Mitchell. I am unable to see any Immigration & Travel for Bruce A Mitchell as I think the records have been destroyed. Do any of you know if you can access these type of records through the library in Toronto. I have chatted with them but the user was not forth with much information.
Kind regards

Can't see anything for him - presume he may have travelled with the Canadian Army and it wasn't recorded ???
See there is an obit listed for the sister Audrey
Audrey Jean (MITCHELL) Livie 88; Peterborough Ontario Toronto Star - 2001-3-17 klf

Hello Sandra,
Yes I have seen this although I was unable to read it.
Many thanks,

Hello again.
Here is a bit of info about immigration records after 1935. I suspect there wouldn't be any records for Bruce if he was travelling with the Army. There might be something for Margaret if that is of interest.
http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/genealogy/022-908.007-e.html
Another place to look for Margaret is the PIER 21 website. This is for immigrants who came into Canada through Halifax, as opposed to other ports. I don't remember what years are covered but WW2 war brides can be found. The website has changed in recent times, however, so I'm not sure how accessible anything is now.
When I found the family in the 1921 census, I actually only keyed in Norman with parents William and Catherine, no last names, and clicked on results from Toronto for the last name Henry just because. I guess I cued into Henry as the second name of William or something ;D.
PB
Added: it appears that the tree on Ancestry has the wrong family for the 1921 census. Most of the rest seems OK but they seem to have omitted Evelyn. It is advisable to use caution when looking at online trees.
Also, the Toronto Star Archives website is pay to view but very inexpensive and you can buy short time periods. If I remember correctly, you can use the index for free .... you only need pay to see the record. I'm not sure how recent the archives go, however.

Hi,
I don't know if you have looked in the Star yet... but using the dates from the tree that Sandra found, you can see Bruce's obit in the 19 Jan 1994 edition, page B18.
He is listed as Bruce A. He died in New Brunswick on Jan 17 1994. Husband of the late Margaret. Father of A (Mrs. R Arsenault), B (Mrs J Morton), T (female, I think), T (Mrs N Arsenault), and M (male). Friend of Wanda. Brother of Evelyn, Helen, Audrey, Kathleen, Ness, William and Norm. Grandfather of 8, Great grandfather of 6. Cremation, no mention of burial location.

Hello Sandra,
Yes I have seen this although I was unable to read it.
Many thanks,
Bumble
Hi - you said you couldn't read Audrey's obit in the Star. In addition to the date that Sandra gave you, it is also in the March 18, 2001 edition, page F6. Maybe you can see that page better.
When you find an image on the Star site, you can increase the size of the image to make it easier to read -- the site gives you the full page, so individual notices can be hard to read if you don't make the image larger.
Audrey Jean Livie died in Peterborough on March 16, 2001. She was in her 89th year. Wife of the late Peter Livie (1986). Mother of R (wife K) of Peterborough. 3 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren are listed by name. Sister of Norm, Helen, and Eve. Predeceased by sisters Nes and Dimp and brothers Bill and Bruce. Interment St. John's Norway Cemetery, Toronto.

Hi again,
I looked for Helen's obit but didn't find it until I searched for Norman!! The Star site is great :) :), but searches don't always work the way you think they will!!
Helen Lillian Jeffrey (nee Mitchell) -- in the Star, April 4, 2002 edition, page B6. She died April 3, 2002, in her 99th year. Wife of the late George Henry Jeffrey. Mother of B. Di Gregorio, A. Sparks and H. Teeter (all 3 are female). Predeceased by her children George, Florence Millar and Murray. Dear sister of Norman Mitchell, Evelyn Tracey and the late Annie (Nessie) Taylor, William, Kathleen (Dimple) Slean, Audrey Livie and Bruce. Interment Prospect Cemetery (Toronto).
RK
PS - still can't find Norman or Evelyn.
