I'm up against a wall here. My great-grandfather was Arthur Baker, born 26 March 1865 in ENGLAND! As you can see, I have a problem! I don't know where to begin finding out where he was born, etc. However, I do believe he arrived in NY, USA aboard the Wisconsin on 24 August 1888. That is the extent of what I know about Arthur, except that he married Mary J Wheeler in NY in 1892 and she was from NY, as were her parents. Can anyone find any clues, perhaps based on the ship he emigrated on? (which was out of Liverpool) Any help would be so much appreciated!

Hi
What information does his marriage certificate give.

Looking at the birth indexes for Jan/Feb/Mar 1865 and Apr/MAy/Jun 1865 (assuming he has no middle name) there are 8 possibilities for him -
Brentford, Bicester, Shoreditch, Islington, Tonbridge, Southampton, Greenwich, Birmingham.
The Brentford one and the Southampton one are clearly on the 1891 census still in England.
The Bicester one dies in 1870
So already it is narrowed down to 5 -
Shoreditech, Islington, Tonbridge, Greenwich or Birmingham.
A bit of time spent may be able to weed out more.

Hi

Rosie
I don't have a marriage certif. for him, just the date. May have to go to the town he was married in and get that. Thanks!

Thanks for narrowing that down for me, liz. Will try to locate photocopy of the marriage license to see if his city of birth is located there. In the meantime, I will look at the records you've listed and see if I can find any clues based on names. His children have some unusual names, maybe his parents or siblings did too!

Arthur says he is a citizen 1920-1940 census, have you found his application to become a citizen as it will give all the details of where he was born and when he arrived in USA.

Thanks for reading! I'm afraid this thread got back to the top with my cousin saying hello! ::) Since I posted about Arthur Baker, I'm happy to report that he's been found! He was born in Wadhurst, Sussex to Jacob Baker and Sarah Ann Paine. Thanks again for your willingness to help!
