Would anybody be able to look up Knutsford Prison records for me?
I am looking for Gravelina Bates (nee Boswell)
She is listed in the 1901 Census as being in the prison.
I would love to know the reason she was there and the period of time.
She did have a child in 1899 so we would be looking at her being admitted in to the prison from 1899-1901.
Any help would be appreciated!!

1881 census she is born Wilmslow - they are living in a Gypsy encampment

this makes me wonder if she did marry ?...or just take the father of the babies surname because I can`t find a marriage for her

They were a travelling family so there are few records available.
I wasn't able to find a marriage record for them.
In fact, I have only been able to find them on census's and I was able to find the records for two of their children, Isaac Jr and Bill.
The place of birth for Gravelina, and all the family, vary from each record between Altringham, Macclesfield and Cheshire so I can't be sure at the moment.
Her parents were George Boswell and Louisa Sherriff.

she had that baby late then ??
she was 44 in 1901 census ...so 42 when she had a baby in 1899...so do I take it she married around 1877 period if she was born 1857 ??

I can't see anything useful on line for Knutsford Prison.
You could send an email to Cheshire Records asking if they have any info for Gravelina.

Knutsford Heritage Centre might also be able to help by pointing you in the right direction.

Your other option could be the local newspapers, I had a quick look at FindMyPast and British Newspapers this morning but didn't see anything.

this 1901 census link just states Knutsford - " Institution " ...where did you find out this was Knutsford Prison ?...could it have beena workhouse ?...was there a workhouse in Knutsford ?

Ancestry shows the record as being His Majestrys Prison

Thanks for the advice Pat it was really helpful, I have emailed them both and hopefully something will come back.
Thank you for looking at the records Garstonite. Yes it was definitely a prison, although I do know there was a workhouse there as well. I think that when she was arrested she had her children taken away from her, so hopefully the records might mention this. Also, I believe that they got married in 1876 because that is the year that their first child Rhoda was born. But once again there is no record for the marriage and no record for the birth of the child (that I can find) so it is all just guess work.
