 That is a very pessimistic estimate. Testing seems to point at lifespans significantly higher. Certainly long enough for the next "new thing" to have come along.

 DVD's and CD's are not a long term way of saving data, but the important bit is that they are making multiple copies because if one fails then there would be a back up.
 
 I went to a talk last year done on archiving Images and we were told that multiple copies stored in different places is best at the moment.
