I am looking for the birth/baptism of John Rutter LAMB c 1772. I know he married Selina Pbillips in Clerkenwell, London in 1798 (his given abode as Manchester). He died 1824 in Manchester. Occupation Mercer.
I have looked for a LAMB/RUTTER marriage but the only one I found was in Kent 1759 but no son John sadly.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks Wilma

John Butler Lamb
aged 52 years,
buried , 15th March 1824
abode Marsden St,
St Mary , Manchester,
is this your John Rutter Lamb,
George Lamb and Thomas, sons of John Rutter Lamb and Selina, buried here also in 1803 and 1808

Yes thank you this is John Rutter Lamb. I have a copy of his burial entry which was transcribed as Butter but actually reads as Rutter.

I have been trying to follow a George (Rutter) Lamb who interesting married a Lydia Phillips in 1800 also at St. James Clerkenwell. The witnesses are the same as on John Rutter Lambs marriage. Was she Selina`s sister? He died in 1850 aged 77 so don`t know where he was born either. He was not born in county on the 1841 Middlesex census. HO107/720/1 folio 5 page 5.

Wow this sounds interesting especially as John named his son George. Pity George couldn't have made it to 1851 census!!
I will try and follow it up.
Thanks a lot

I have found Lydia's baptism in Clerkenwell and can confirm she is Selina's sister (Selina bap. 1780)
At least we can assume that John Rutter Lamb and George were brothers - if we can find them

The will explains it all :) he even states that they were to take the surname of Lamb.

Just to add a small detail about the baptism of John Rutter in 1771: the DRO transcription has “Margaret Rutter (formerly of Stockton-on-Tees)”

Thank you so much. Really enjoying this site. Amazing. ☺️☺️

Re John Lamb;
As burial does not have an age we are only guessing when he was born.
So a range of 1721-1750 is possible.
Also we have no idea if he was actually born in Durham.
But I am going to go with what I have found.
A JAMES Lamb was bapt children Stockton-on-Tees;
DOROTHY 27 Sep 1750
MARGARET 30 Jul 1752
Father JAMES, Mr James Lamb
ELIZABETH 16 May 1755, Parents JAMES/DOROTHY, Mr James Lamb
DOROTHY, Wife of JAMES Lamb, Wine merchant, buried 26 Dec 1791
Dorothy (1750) died 1835 unmarried and her Will is on Ancestry.
I am unable to read it properly.
(waiting for an eye op!)
Also Margaret died 1839 age 86
Cant see a Marriage for James Lamb to a Dorothy but was hoping for one to see if they had a John born pre 1750!
