:D Try as I might, I have been able to get no information at all about Isabella Muir.
I know she married Robert Coxhead on 17th Feb 1851
and she had a sister Mary Muir, who became Mrs Hill.
Robert arrived in 1842. from Aldbourne, Wilts. Eng.
Is there a kind soul, with time to spare, out there, who could
just give me a starter?
:D Lesanne.

Hi Lesanne,
An "Isabella MUIR (Mrs COXHEAD)" appears in the 'Roll of Early Settlers and Descendants in the Auckland Province before 1852.'
I'll see if I can sight this source for you, and have a quick look at old electoral rolls. Do you know the ship they arrived on?
If Isabella Muir and Robert Coxhead were early settlers in New Zealand their descendants may have submitted information to the First Families Collection of the NZ Society of Genealogists (NZSG), but in any case the Society is likely to have other information you should find useful. I suggest you contact the NZSG via their website http://www.genealogy.org.nz/

:D Thanks Riley for repling so quick.
Although there is plenty of info on Robert.
Isabella, seems to have just appeared.
Robert and his 2 brothers are the origins of Coxheads in NZ.
We all start out in "woodsend" near Aldbourne, Wilts.
I have a picture of Isabella, and that is that.
Her sister Mary Hill (nee Muir) was also in NZ.
I wonder if the girls family arrived around the same time.
Thanks again for your help.
:D Lesanne.

:D Just found a new piece of info on Isabella,
that she was bapt. Glasgow.15th April 1832.
So her family must have come/gone to N.Z. with them as children.
Lesanne. :D

Hi Lesanne,
Just found some COXHEAD's on the same database using a wildcard search, but much later than 1842.

:D Hey Riley, Thanks for all this.
That is really great Info.
The Duchess of Argyll and The Jane Gifford sailed together from England to New Zealand, I believe.
After trawling through Pass lists for The Jane Gifford, 'cause I think Robert Coxhead was on that ship. But I now think he must of been a crew member, to get passage?
I kept coming across The Duchess of Argyll, at the time looking for Coxhead.
It looks like they travelled together but on different ships. Awh! How romantic.
This is terrific news, thank you so much.
:D Lesanne.
-
;D Wow, even more Coxhead's. I shall have to look up David and Emma.
Perhaps they are following David's Uncles.
Robert had 2 brothers, William, on the "Josephine Willis" Jan 1855 and
Charles, "Caduceus" May 1859.
It seems that all Coxhead's in NZ can trace back to these, But with David
in the picture... Hmmm.
Thanks again. Lesanne. :D
-
Hi Lesanne,
No worries, pleased to help in any way. In case you haven't seen the full passenger list for the 'Duchess of Argyle', look here. It includes the surgeon's report; http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~ourstuff/DuchessofArgyle.htm#CARADUS%20FAMILY:
I checked the pasenger list of the 'Jane Gifford' on the same site but couldn't see any COXHEAD, and crew weren't usually mentioned. I'd love to know where you found any crew lists.

:D Hi Riley, This site should give a bit of background into my family.

Thanks again for your time. :D Lesanne. :D

There is yet another Coxhead family that went to NZ. Three of the children became NZ photographers hence my interest. I have prepared a tentative tree:
1. WILLIAM COXHEAD b. 1795, London, d. c.1860, Rochester, Monroe Co., New York, m. 27 SEP 1814, St. Mary, Islington, Middlesex, ELIZABETH ANN BOLDEN.
Children:
i HENRY COXHEAD b. 26 APR 1817, bap. 14 JAN 1818, Saint Leonards, Shoreditch, London.
ii ELISABETH MARTHA COXHEAD b. 4 MAY 1815, bap. 4 AUG 1815, Saint Luke Old Street, Finsbury and 14 JAN 1818 Saint Leonards, Shoreditch, London, d. 24 SEP 1891.
iii WILLIAM EDWARD COXHEAD b. 28 MAR 1816, bap. 14 JAN 1818, Saint Leonards, Shoreditch, London.
iv CHARLES SAMUEL COXHEAD b. 6 DEC 1818, bap. 29 JAN 1819, Saint Leonards, Shoreditch, London.

Second Generation

vi ARTHUR COXHEAD
vii POLLY (KATE) COXHEAD
viii ELIZABETH ANN COXHEAD
Some of this info comes from Rootsweb:
http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=:a18263&id=I0124
Frank was the most prominent photographer who took many landscapes in NZ as well as operating a portrait studios. He emigrated to the USA in the 1890s. With his brothers Frank and William they operated as Coxhead Brother. Between them they operated studios in Dunedin, Timaru, Oamaru and Invercargill.
Other branches of this family preceded Frank to America.
I would be happy to here from any relatives of the above.
Cheers!
Marcel

Are you still interested in Isabella Muir (bp.15 Apr 1832, d. 30 May 1893) m. Robert Coxhead (bp. 10 Dec 1820) on 17 Feb 1851? I have access to as much information as you wish, including a photo I took of her gravestone and ALL her Coxhead descendants as I am married to a Coxhead.
I wasn't aware at the time I took the photo that Isabella is also buried there so I intend to return and rub chalk on the stone to bring up the words.
Isabella was the sister-in-law of my wife's great-grandfather so I have only included a little information on my webpage on the Coxheads which you may check out at http://www.keithblayney.com/Blayney/Coxhead.html (just ask me for the password).
The Coxhead photographers are not related (at least as far back as we can trace)
Keith

Gulp... WOW.... Speechless..
Keith, what can I say... Thank you so much for contacting me.
We shall have a lot to catch up on.
Have you seen the book "The Coxhead Family" written by
the descendants of the 3 brothers?
I was only looking at the last entry for Robert on the 1841 census,
last night, 12 hours before your picture arrived......... :o
WOW... and more...... :D
-
Yes, it is on my knee. Anything you want from it is yours for the asking - do you want me to scan the pages on Isabella and Robert? Ask any question, send a list of descendants, give you access to Robert's ancestry back to Tristram COXHEAD b~1540....turn water into wine?
Keith
-
I have looked at the site. It contains so much information that I will take a couple of weeks. But certainly useful for anyone looking at the Coxheads.
Have all the dates/marriages etc been cross checked?
I will have to make some changes. Roberts Grandparents and so forth back.
Also, Eliza Coxhead (Robert's sister) married George Coxhead. Do you know of a better birth date for George's grandfather John Coxhead (=Miriam)?
Will PM. :) Lesanne.
-
Lesanne, I'm researching soldiers who fought in NZ Army WWI and KIA or DOW.
I'm looking for info on 1 George Coxhead, (Dd of Disease) who had his uncle George as NOK from Manurewa NZ. He was son of Henry James and Mrs J Derley (remarried) from Sydney.
If you have any clues on this Coxhead family I would appreciate any help you can give.
Are you still looking for info on Coxhead in Mahurangi which I saw along the way. Just may be able to help you with a property Plan from 1800's, but yet to look.
This is my first msg on this site.
regards
Keith

:D
Hello Keith,
Warm welcome to Rootschat. All very friendly here. Try and help out where ever we can.
The Coxheads in NZ are my direct line from Aldbourne in Wiltshire. Robert left England in 1841 just after the census which shows him in Aldbourne, his brothers followed. His sister stayed and that's my Gtx Gran who married another Coxhead.
As for their descendants, I gave it a wide birth when I got to about the 12/13th child they had about 14/15....
The links on this thread should give most information on that side of the Coxhead family.
Are you a descendant?
I did visit NZ in 2004 and found Coxhead Creek Road, where I'm lead to believe 'they' first arrived in Matakana 8)
I shall have to check up on who married who etc.
Hope you find your way around this site. There is a board for NZ and WW1 soldiers etc.
Click on the top leaf, up there and scroll down....
Happy hunting.
Lesanne.

Lesanne, thanks for that. No I'm not part of the clan. Just hoping to track down family of george to include some info and or photo of him for this war history.
I have contacted 1 or 2 in Auckland who are related but no info, think I need to contact the Aussie side somehow.
I had a quick look for Coxhead creek plan and came up with this attached. Doesn't mention Coxhead, instead Webster who was big land owner back in the late 1800's. This is the earliest plan available in the area and shows Coxhead Creek although not named then. Webster bought the land from the Maoris some time in the 1840's probably, but it took years to ratify the land claim, hence the later date penciled 1886.
Thanks for the WWI link also
keith

:D Thank you for posting the plan of the area. It would be interesting to find out why it was named Coxhead Creek.
I don't think I shall get to NZ in the near future. Never know.......... ::)
For some reason I think Copper mines come into the story, as well as Maori lands.
I am posting a very modern picture of activities in NZ. Yes, that's me in the boat....
Lesanne :D
-
Copper was mined for a while on Kawau Island just of the shore near Matakana/Mahurangi so that is were the connection could have come from.
I live in that area so if you need any information just let me know.

Hi all
There is a Coxhead Rd in Manurewa, South Auckland, too... if you weren't aware.
:) mare
-
Ah..........Manurewa my first port of call when we arrived here in Godzone from the UK 1967. A good move that but the better one was moving North.
Alan NZ
-
You didn't get far from the airport then Alan, but I agree good move heading further north :)
-
The only good thing that ever came out of Auckland was State Highway 1.
;D
-
Hello Alan and Mare,
Thanks for those links.
I think the other Road is the same family. There were 3 brothers Coxhead.
A place there, Thames and Woodside/Woodsend is where they lived.... :-[ I think...
Keith, That's where the name Dursley goes with Coxhead.... er, trying to find notes :-[
Lesanne.. (horribly embarrassed not having notes in a good, filed order) ...... ;D
-
Woodside is the old name for Wiri which is just on the northern side of Manurewa :)
-
We lived down there. Dagenham street.!
-
:D Blimey :D The brain cells do have a good filing system.... ;D ;D and this thread started over 3 years ago :o
-
There will probably be some Coxhead family history recorded by Manurewa Historical society and filed in the archives... I could check for you ...
-
:D :D Mare, Alan and Keith,
Thank you for your very kind offers.... but where/who would I start with.
I have the 'snippets' found on the 'net'.
A 'Tephra' Scavenger Hunt seems a good idea. I have my name down on the list.
Then we can 'pool' the info available. :D
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,259516.165.html
best wishes
Lesanne
-
I'll watch for it then Lesanne :) but in the meantime I will make an enquiry with Manurewa Historical for you ...
:) mare
-
Oh thanks Mare. That would be good.
I'm not sure when it will be my turn... but it will give me chance to unearth notes filed.... Coxhead ;D
Lesanne.
-
Hi Lesanne
I've spoken to one of the archivists at Manurewa Historical Soc. apparently they were unable to track down any of the Coxhead family willing to do a family interview.... however there are a couple of publications on the area and the Coxheads are mentioned in those regarding home and property. I have copies, but my sister has them at the moment. If there is anything to photograph I can do that. We sometimes go past Coxhead Creek Rd when we go to Matakana and also the Coxhead Rd around Maramarua on the way to Thames. I had wondered if there was a connection to one family .
:) mare
-
Mare and Lesanne,
I spoke to one of the Maramarua Coxheads a day or so ago. Couple live in Thames, they know there is a family connection with the Manurewa family but that's about it. One of the earlier land owners at Maramarua/Mangatarata was George, (see Archway), that's why i got interested because The chap from WWI- DOD - was also George.
If by chance there's a photo of George WWI in the publications, I'd be interested.
Keith
-
Keith I'll watch out for anything I can find, and Manurewa Historical are interested with anything more I can relate to the area.
:) mare
-
...some pics of the Coxhead Road signs... was able to photograph all 3 areas over 3 days ...
Monday 20 October 2008 Coxhead Creek Rd Matakana ( off Leigh Rd Whangateau )
-
They look a little small now I've posted :-\ I've done them all the same but I can email bigger if wanted :)
Sunday 19 October 2008 Coxhead Rd Manurewa off Weymouth Rd Manurewa
-
Saturday 18 October 2008 Coxhead Rd Maramarua off State Highway 2
-
:o OOo I seem to know that place.... ;D Mare thank you for posting these photo's.
It seems sooo long ago. I shall just have to come back.
-
Hi again Lesanne
The Maramarua Coxhead Rd is a loop road from SH2 to highway 25 and it appears to cut through the Puketotara farm of the Coxheads. We didn't drive up it last month, hay making machinery was coming and going, so last Friday we approached it from the highway 25 end and I took some pics for you. I still have your email address from when I sent you the newspaper clipping so watch for a batch of photos, I'll make them web page size which is approx twice what I have posted on here. Nice green countryside, buttercups and calves :D plus farm signs etc ...
I'll just put the street sign on here ... do let me know if you want any copies emailed in bigger format of any I have put on here, it is no trouble ...
:) mare
