My Great Grandparents were Thomas Whelan ,Gamekeeper and Julia Dalton married in 1848 in Carlow, their son my grandfather William married for the second time in Dublin in 1922 citing the above as his parents, however i have never found a birth or baptism for him circa 1870.
I found his first marriage in 1894 also in Dublin citing his Parents as William Whelan and Margaret Redmond of Wexford., for which i was able to find a birth cert for 1870 this has been proven wrong recently by a descendant of William and Margaret here on the Wexford board who knows that William jnr never left Wexford.
So its back to the drawing board, last week i purchased the birth cert for his brother John 1865 '' The Course'' Tullowphelin and today i purchased what i believe to be his mothers death cert,
Death in Tullow,Carlow .Julia Whelan age 60 married wife of Thomas Whelan a Herd ,in May 1884 at'' Elingrove'' now i do not know if this is a townland or house name, has anyone from Carlow heard of Elingrove.
I have four likely candidates for Thomas's death from 1885 to 1897 all above the age of 56 to 86.
Any help with any of the above much appreciated.
Cheers Dathai.

Hi,
In the parish of Ardistan there is a townland by the name of Ellengrove it is mentioned in the tithe applotment books for Aghade could this be the place you are looking for.
Diarmuid.
-
Excellent Diarmuid thank you. I will have a look on the applotments now.
-
That spelling that you gave me Diarmuid has led me to Ellen Grove house ,Tullow,Ardristan ,now a protected structure believed built before 1830.

Hi
The address you are looking for is Elm Grove Tullow it is less than a mile from Tullow on the Bunclody Rd. I lived in Tullow nearly 40 years ago and there were Whelans living there at that time. I think the man was John Whelan he had a wife and 1 daughter, Rita (she would probably be in her 60s now). I think the house is still there
Hope this helps. Sorry I have no further info and haven't been in Tullow in years.

Thanks Ronnie , i had come across it being spelt as Elm Grove on some documents, would you know if the protected structure Ellen Grove and Elm Grove are one and the same.
-
Coincidence? my fathers sister was also a Rita and when i found her marriage it was Margarita.

Hi
Meant to get back to you. If you go online to the National Archives and get the 1901 Census and go to browse census click on Carlow -Tullowbeg- Roscatt you will find Whelans also in Ardristan (the next townland) Elm Grove is probably Roscatt. Do the same with the 1911 census and hopefully you will find what you are looking for.
Hope this is helpful.
