I am trying to read the address where an ancestor was living in Edinburgh when he married in 1864. I take it to be No 17 H??? Close, Pleasance, Edinburgh.
I can't see anything on a current map which fits the bill. I have had a look at some of the historic town plans on the NLS website, but drawn a blank.
Wondered if anyone here had any ideas.

Think it is Hardwell Close. It is still there - runs between Pleasance and Howden Street and is between East Crosscauseway and Gilmour Street.

I would agree with that.

Here's a pic of it in the 1920's.

I can't believe I didn't find that when I looked for it! How embarrassing.
Many thanks to you all. You have even found a photo. ;D
