Happy St Piran's Day, the Patron Saint of Cornwall and of Tin Miners.
Details about St Piran or Pyran here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Piran
There is a campaign for the day be made a "Bank Holiday" in the same way as the other Patron Saints.
If it means a day off, and an day of Cornish Pasties then it sounds absolutely wonderful. If also means that we can remember the miners that travelled far and wide from the the many corners of the country to serve in the mining industry of tin in Cornwall then it's even better.

PS Directors Cut: (Like a DVD Extra) "The RootsChat Pasty Photoshoot" Below (in the making of the RootsChat St Piran's header). Unfortunately, pasties were harmed in the process, but they were very tasty indeed. :)
-
I was just trying to work out what was different about the RootsChat header. I'm all in favour of another Bank Holiday, but not this time of the year. We need one between the end of August and Christmas.
I'm sure you took very good care of the pasties and handled them with loving care before giving them a decent send off. ;D
-
Well spotted!
Oh yes, :) we even put them on the back seat of the car in a little bag (no, really we did!) to get them home intact so we could photograph them.

With the seat belt on? ;D I was trying to work out the significance of the banner earlier :D

I hope you checked their family history to make sure they were proper Cornish pasties and not imposters. ;)
-
No, sorry, we didn't put the seat belts on them as we didn't want to scare them ;)
Incidentally, the Cornish Pasty has a special significance with Tin Miners...

:'( :'( :'( :'( :'(
Here in New South WALES, Australia we need to wait until Easter before the next "public" holiday comes along. The first recorded public holiday was celebrated in 1789, in June. Seems it was the monarch's birthday! Perhaps that is why there's a 'long weekend' in June every year here in NSW .... Queen's birthday weekend as it is currently known.
Bank holiday in NSW is the first Monday in August each year. It usually applies to employees in the finance industry eg Stock Brokers, the Stock Exchange, the Banks, Insurance Brokers, etc. It is not a general public holiday, so it is not a day off school :)
But Trystan, if you can organise a bank holiday for St Piran's across the globe (but of course) I am quite sure there's many a Cornish Descendant in NSW who will be mighty pleased as even St Patrick's Day is not a public holiday in NSW. :'( :'( :'(
But pasties will be on our dinner table this evening ;D ;D ;D
Cheers, JM

Well they were found in Lancashire... ::)

Hey JM, wouldn't that be wonderful?! We could have a great bit RootsChat global Cornish Pasty eating day too! :)
If people go to the top of the post and share this topic by pressing the Facebook, Twitter and Google+ buttons, then who knows, together we might just be able to do it! :)

even St Patrick's Day is not a public holiday in NSW.
Just realised St David, St Patrick, St George and St Andrews' days aren't Bank Holidays here. Perhaps we need a RC campaign to get all of them made into holidays.
-
;D
Nought better than a proper home made cornish pastie in one hand and a hot cuppa black tea in the other and standing in the middle of a forest (of headstones) in regional NSW, while determining which headstone to photograph first.....
I don't think that I have facebook, twitter or Goggle + presence. Is there an old fashioned way to do petitions?
Cheers, JM

There probably is, like sticking a stamp on an envelope and walking to the post box. Or perhaps writing to the newspaper.
The best combination though, has to be Cornish Pasty and Yorkshire Tea, followed by a slice of Bara Brith.

You learn something new every day. ;D Ashamed to say I've never heard of it.
I am feeling peckish for pasties.
-
But you must have seen St Piran's Flag?!
-
My car has the Cornish flag sticker on the boot and it wasn't until someone asked if I came from Cornwall that I knew it was St Piran's flag.
I don't know if it was a Cornishman or someone who had a good holiday who put it there but the car was registered in West Sussex and appears from the historic paperwork - services etc - never to have been 'residing' there.

-
But you must have seen St Piran's Flag?!
no :-[
(looks like a different coloured St Georges)
-
You're not alone Ruskie - I haven't heard of St Piran, his flag or his special day either :-[
Nice to see we're celebrating someone/something but I did miss the News flash of "Happy Australia Day" a few weeks ago ;D
-
As you're both in Australia, I suppose you can be forgiven! ;D ;D
I was brought up in the West of England, and had many happy holidays in Cornwall.
So I used to see St Piran's Flag on cars, flagpoles, etc all over Cornwall - often with the "Mebyon Kernow" legend.
Cornwall considers itself to be separate to England! It used to have it's own parliament - the Stannary Parliament.
I was once, many years ago, in a pub in Cornwall, and overheard this conversation:
Man 1 "Where you going Saturday?"
Man 2 "I'm goin' to England, shopping". - he was going to Plymouth!
-
I noticed St David's day, but not sure if Australia Day was recognized Di. ;)
I'm not offended though.
I am a little bit miffed that I didn't know it was St Piran's Day or I eould have celebrated with some pasties and clotted cream. Any excuse. ;D My Londoner OH hadn't heard of it either. :-X
Great story KGarrad.
-
Thanks for the pasties, Trystan, although I'm going to feel hungry by mid-morning.
-
Sorry, Trystan! But it simply has to be said?! ;D
Your pasties in the photograph are NOT Cornish Pasties! ;D
(It's a protected named foodstuff these days! Protected Geographical Indication)
Cornish Pasties are crimped along the edge - so the miners had a "handle" to hold, and discard!
http://www.cornishpastyassociation.co.uk/about-pgi/frequently-asked-questions/
So - looks like you have imposters?! :o
-
Happy St. Piran's Day to all my Cornish friends and family. Trystan well done on they pasty's on the masthead, they'm 'ansome mi dear ;D
-

Hey Seoras,
(I'd merged your other topic onto this thread, so you might see two of the same message from you now!)
Well it's all down to you challenging us to have a St Piran's day that we just had to go out and buy some pasties, photographs them, and have them for lunch :)
Trystan
-
I appear to have put it up twice, dunno how that happened. :-[ Ah just seen your message Trystan. Ah well will get the message across ;D
It has turned out nice down here too.
-
Seoras - it's because I merged the new topic that you put in the Common Room onto this topic. Good to see the flag with blue skies behind it. :)
Have a wonderful pasty-filled day!

Cornwall considers itself to be separate to England! It used to have it's own parliament - the Stannary Parliament.
It is one of the six recognized Celtic nations KG, I believe you, like me. reside in one of them. Brittany, Cornwall, Scotland, Ireland, Wales and the Isle of Man.
-
Thanks for the pasties, Trystan, although I'm going to feel hungry by mid-morning.
I had one for breakfast ;D
-
Pasty and clotted cream?! :o That's just weird!!
;D ;D :-X :-X
Yes, well maybe not together. One is the main course and the other is the pudding. Not sure what I would eat the cream with, as I'm sure it would be yummy on it's own. :P
Trystan, your pasty photo shoot is hilarious! ;D
-
