Title: Nathaniel Bate
Post by: hanoverbill on Tuesday 04 March 14 21:02 GMT (UK)
I am searching for further information on my ancestor Nathaniel Bate after he makes a petition for a Crown Land Grant in Kingston, both in 1836 & 1837. I have copies of the application but no proof of whether he was granted the land or not, and if so, where it may have been. He signed his petition correspondence, Nathaniel Bate, Innkeeper, Stuartsville. He had previously served in the 66th. Regiment of Foot, and was the Adjutant at Old Fort Henry in Kingston.

Hi,

I was just looking in the Digital Kingston site and I see that he named his son "Fort Henry Bate".  He was the first child born at the Fort - in 1838.  Wow!!  Quite a distinction, but an unfortunate name.

It looks as if in 1840, he was appointed Assistant Barrack Master in Niagara.

Digital Kingston site.  Just search for Bate

Hi again,

I don't know the age of your Nathaniel, but there is a Mrs Nathaniel Bate in Port Hope who has a daughter in 1850.

Thank you for the responses regarding my ancestor Nathaniel Bate, they are most helpful. I was aware of the Digital Kingston records, although I did not see reference to the Barrack Master at Niagara there. I am also aware of the child born to Nathaniel Bate at Fort Hope in 1850. Nathaniel was born in Kent, London, England in 1798, so he would have been 52 years of age at that time, but he also had a son Nathaniel who was born at the Citadel in Quebec in 1827, so it could be his child also.
