Hi Ed,

Family search show a burial at Crosthwaite for a Mary Lindsay 13 January 1814 - daughter of Robert Lindsay and Ann.
Please could you tell me if the parish registers show a birth for Mary Lindsay or any other Lindsay children born to this couple. (Could be a sister to Esther Lindsay christened Newlands By Keswick 21 st January 1798 ?
Also would there be any marriage or burial information for Robert Lindsay and Ann at Crosthwaite ?

Sandra

Can't seem to come up with any positive proof of Robert Lindsay/Lindsey/Linsey and Ann.
Mary could be a sister to Esther (1798) - it seems Newlands was a chapelry in the Crosthwaite parish.

Hi ED,

You are a star.  Thank you very much indeed. Was there a special place in the graveyard where we might find any reference to Mary Lindsay.  I know they didn't have much money back then so probably no headstone to speak of.

I should be very grateful if you can manage the following lookups - I hope it's not too much to ask.
I'm trying to trace Joseph Birkett of Seathwaite, Borrowdale (?1755-1836) back several generations, using all the names from his brother Daniel (?1733-1817) and nephew Daniel
Birkett (ca. 1763-1818)'s wills.  The notes after the list of entries provide a bit of background - happy to provide more if you're interested.

I'm hoping the original entries will give extra information, such as where the parents lived,
or the father's occupation.

Any help appreciated

Denis

marriages, Crosthwaite, Cumberland:
19 Oct 1714 - Thomas Birkett & Judeth Wren

30 May 1747 - John Birkett & Sarah Jopson

1748-53 - John Birkett and Ann  ?? (see note 1)

baptisms, Crosthwaite, Cumberland:

4 Aug 1715 - Sarah, dau. of Thomas Birkett & Judeth
- (see note 2) -
14 Jan 1730 - James, son of Thomas Birkett & Judeth
25 Sep 1733 - Daniel, son of Thomas Birket & Judeth

24 Jul 1748 - Thomas, son of John Birket & Sarah

- possible later children of John (see note 3) -
21 Feb 1753 - Jonathan, son of John Birket & Ann
9 Jul 1753 - John, son of John Birkett & Ann
1 Dec 1754 - John, son of John Birket & Ann
27 Mar 1755 - Joseph, son of John Birket & Ann
5 Jan 1758 - Thomas, son of John Birkit & Ann
8 Mar 1759 - Sarah, dau. of John Birket & Ann
15 Jun 1763 - Nancy, dau. of John Birket & Ann
11 Nov 1764 - Jonathan, son of John Birket & Ann

note 1 - gap of 15 years - I think they had a son John during this period.
He might have been born somewhere else of course, but I can't find any children
with parents Thomas Birkett and Judith in this gap, except a Wm. Birkhead bapt.
30 May 1716 in London.

note 2 - I think Sarah died 1748-52, John then married Ann - but the
only John Birkett / Ann marriages in IGI Cumberland 1740-55 are:
John Birkett / Ann Jackson, m 10 May 1752  Moresby, Cumberland
John Birkett / Anne Graham, m 10 Aug 1753  Burgh By Sands, Cumberland
The Moresby one looks unlikely to be the Borrowdale John Birkett, as
there are children b Moresby (parents John B / Ann) in the 1750s.
Is it possible there's a marriage in the Crosthwaite register that didn't make it
into the IGI? - I know there are several years missing from the register in the 1650/60s.

note 3 - possible children of John's 2nd marriage, to Ann -
The dates are too close to be all one family; from later records I
think John 1753, Joseph 1755 and Sarah 1759 belong to the family I'm
interested in.  There should also be James ca. 1757, Betty ca. 1761
and Daniel ca. 1763, but I can't find any likely possibilities in IGI
or on an Ancestry.co.uk for these three.

That's wonderfully prompt service!

Longthwaite was Judith's parents' farm - I've got the succession of Wrens from her father Gawin down to the 19th C.  And Stonethwaite (a hamlet not just one farm) is where I thought Thomas's son John should have been.  So far, so good ...

Though I wonder why so many of the family, e.g. John, went unrecorded (he was presumably born at Longthwaite or Stonethwaite around 1720-25).  I wonder where I got James from? I thought it was IGI - must check - perhaps he's fictitious.

Thanks again

Denis

Sandra - PS -

You said `Nothing listed for 14 Jan 1730 - James, son of Thomas Birkett & Judeth'
Did you check under 1729 and 1730?  With New Year then being 25 March, it should appear near the end of the 1729 entries.  [If as I think, IGI dates are all converted to new-style.]

I've just checked familysearch.org, and it does appear there with exactly the same database refs. as Daniel in 1733.

Thanks very much.

Seeing Edbar's offer of Sep 2015 i there any chance of getting a copy of the whole register of Crosthwaite B & M up to 1812 to browse?  It would save me bothering with too many lookup requests as I try and sort out the Borrowdale Birketts and Braithwaites (i managed the Jopsons a few years back).

If not, I'd still very much appreciate details of the 1750/60s  Birkett baptisms I mentioned in my first email.

Best wishes

Denis

Hi,
I have:
Lancelot DOBSON married Jane Preston 8/12/1777
Peter GARNETT baptised 6/4/1777 parents William & Elizabeth
William GARNETT married Elizabeth Moon 1/1/1770
Elizabeth Moon baptised 17/9/1744 parents John & Elizabeth.
Got these from IGI. If you have access to the records does it provide any more info e.g. where they lived occupations etc. Anything would be great.
Thanking you in anticpation,

Phil Orrell

Further to my request of a few years back, I've recently discovered that the full transcripts of the Crosthwaite Registers 1562-1812 are now available free online on familysearch.org . Just use the Search drop-down menu to search for a Book, and search for "Registers of Crosthwaite".  They are in 4 volumes (printed in around 1930), with Indexes for both Names and Places, and you can either read them online or even download them to your own computer to browse at leisure.  The transcriptions look very carefully done, so though I suppose there could be a few cases in which you'd want to check with a film of the original registers - or even the original register itself, generally they are much easier to use than the originals.

So my new question is: does anyone know of an easy way to find out which parish registers have been transcribed and printed in this way?
