Would like to know what happened to this Emily Barrett. My great grandmothers sister was Emily Augusta Barrett b.1889/1890 Gloucestershire, England. She was a servant and had left for London after 1911 to work but no-one heard from her since so would love to find out before my great aunt passes away (she is the last of this generation left and would love to know what happened to her mum's sister!).
Emily Barrett is aged 24 on the passenger list departed London 6 Aug 1915 bound for Wellington.
Are there any other records for these passengers upon their arrival? Any help or thoughts on this will be much appreciated!

Hello,
Emily Augusta married William Robert Wilkinson in 1922.
She died aged 60 years in 1951.

Blimey I nearly choked on my coffee then! Ty for your swift reply. So pleased to see the middle name Augusta, how likely is it that it could be her? Is there any corresponding birth records for this person in New Zealand?

Both Emily and William were buried in the Riverton Cemetery in Southland. Her date of death was 15.9.1951.

Very likely I would say. Your lady was born in the UK? The Emily Augusta found here is virtually the same age.
(You can check through our BDM on line index.)
You could obtain a printout (cheaper and may contain more information than a certificate) on line from New Zealand BDM, website given below.

Yes, my Emily Augusta Barrett was born Blakeney (East Dean), Gloucestershire, England. Many many family members including myself are still in Gloucestershire. Really appreciate your help!

William Robert Wilkinson died on 19.3.1968 aged 87 years.
A Probate/will is held at Archives for him. Occupation: drain layer.
No Probate/will held for Emily Augusta.

Which record does it make the most sense to go for - marriage? Depends on who registers the death as to how accurate the info on that may be.

If thinking about obtaining a death printout (or marriage* printout) for that matter, go to the New Zealand BDM website already mentioned and look for the "Data Collected" in each instance. Compared to the information on the England certificates I think you will be impressed.
*This in particular would be a good one to go for as the information would be provided by the bride & groom. Whereas at death the information is provided by someone obviously other than the deceased person, hence for example ages being a bit out of kilter. Although it is of course not unknown for both men & women to fudge their age at the time of their marriage!

Our messages crossed!

Lol - thanks x

I checked the NZ BDM index again and there is only one marriage for an Emily Augusta Barrett from 1900 up until the cut off for historical marriages (around 1933/early 1934, i.e. those that occurred 80 years or more ago).
No deaths for an Emily Augusta Barrett, so Emily Augusta Wilkinson certainly looks to be the lady you are researching..............

Ur an angel, very excited now and looking forward to getting some confirmation that I have at last found her! The family heard a rumour that she had travelled to USA with family she worked for and for a long time believed she may have perished on Titanic. I disproved this but thought she may well have gone abroad for whatever reason just not necessarily to USA!
-
Another thought.........
You might consider asking if a Rootschatter could do death notice look ups in a Southland newspaper for both Emily & her husband as any children could be mentioned here.

Hi,

Hi BlackPearl
... there are a number of family trees at ancestry.com for this William Robert WILKINSON (died at Invercargill). It's possible Emily was his 2nd wife ?
I'll go back and check over them to see what else can be had.

Thank you!

Hi
Sorry to say that none of the various trees record William Robert WILKINSON's wife named Emily.
They mention his marriage in 1910 to an Annie BLACK (although she appears in NZ marriage records 1910 as "Annie SMOLENSKI") ??? There was apparently one child > dau. Annie Mary b. 1911 of that union. So none of that is of much help to you. :(
I did a quick check of the electoral rolls and found no obvious "children" sharing an address with Emily and William (that is not to say that there wasn't issue from the marriage.)

We will hopefully see if any information re issue can be found in newspaper death notices..........
Minniehaha.
-
Not of great importance, ;D ... but noticed that there was also a Divorce record (ex Invercargill Court) for WILKINSON - William Robert v. WILKINSON - Annie ... dated 1922.
-
The year that he married Emily :)
-
Yes ... 1922. :D
-
Can anyone pinpoint the whereabouts of Emily Augusta Barrett around 1919 please?
Minniehaha.
-
There is no Emily Augusta BARRETT in 1919. There is an Emily BARRETT, 301 Hereford St, Christchurch, spinster, who doesn't seem to appear on the previous roll nor the following one.
I did notice that in the 1949 electoral roll, William Robert and Emily Augusta are living at 273 Herbert St, Invercargill. He's a drainer, she's listed as married. Also at that address is Leonard William WILKINSON, labourer. There is a corresponding death for a WILKINSON, Leonard William in 1967 aged 46.

A query posted online regarding William Robert Wilkinson which sounds relevant:
http://boards.ancestrylibrary.com/thread.aspx?mv=flat&m=5&p=localities.oceania.newzealand.southland
-
Well found Helen. :) [Obviously I missed Leonard William in my earlier search. :-[ ]
-
There's a Probate record for a Leonard William WILKINSON at Dunedin Archives NZ.
WILKINSON - Leonard William - Invercargill - retired driver -- 1967
-
Leonard William WILKINSON - burial at (Roman Catholic section) Eastern Cemetery, Invercargill.
Cemetery record shows his age at death (on 11 May 1967) as 52 years. Headstone inscription shows "Bill Wilkinson 1920-1967.
-
Another look at electoral rolls (and have cleaned my spectacles this time ! ;D )
In 1954 / 1957 - William Robert WILKINSON - drainer - is at 177 Mary Street, Invercargill.
In 1963 at same address - retired.
Looking for Leonard William WILKINSON in 1954 finds him on the Invercargill Supplementary Roll - occupation, lorry driver ... at 177 Mary Street
ALSO ... at 177 Mary Street on same 1954 Supplementary e/roll, is >
Vernon Ottway WILKINSON - labourer
Walter Ronald WILKINSON - driver
and Elizabeth Henrietta WILKINSON - married.
-----------------------
NZ BDM (online) has following deaths;
1989 - WILKINSON - Vernon Ottway - d.o.b. 15 April 1929
1999 - WILKINSON - Ronald Walter - d.o.b. 15 April 1932
Possibly brothers of Leonard William WILKINSON ???
-
Thank you Helen for the Electoral Roll information.
The reason I asked is that on "Papers Past" there is an item concerning one Emily A. Barrett and her illegitimate son born 10.4.1919 @ Christchurch.
['NZ Truth' dated 10.5.1919.]

Southland Crematorium records :
Vernon Ottway WILKINSON - d. 22 September 1989
Ronald Walter WILKINSON - d. 29 November 1999
Also burial record (and headstone photo) for Leonard William WILKINSON - d. 1967
