My grandfather was John Kelly (known as john patrick kelly) born 1892 in (kings county - guess)  his father was john kelly snr mother not known
John Kelly married Agnes Cooke in salford england 24/11/1923
he died aged 51    27/11/1943
I was told by my aunt that john kelly was a desterter in WW1
This is all we know we have not got his birth certificate
we do know he was Catholic
he told his children he was from Robertstown
How can I find any more about him please ?

In practical terms - Robertstown is a village (not a town) in co Kildare - a 40 -50 minutes drive from Dublin Airport via the N7 motorway. There is one Catholic Church (has always been there) which probably may have baptismal records if your relative was catholic. Also I believe there is some focus in Ireland at present relating to pardons for men who left Ireland to join the war as the Government kept a register of their details. They were barred from entitlement to any kind of benefits = welfare /unemployment /housing ++++etc.
The Births Deaths and Marriages registers office (google telephone number) is situated in NAAS  Town which is 2 miles away from Robertstown.

It's men who deserted from the Irish Army to fight in WWII that were refused benefits.

A deserter from WWI is British Army, many have received a pardon, not sure if all have yet.

You need to find his birth cert and his army record if it survived, but John Kelly is a common name so the place to start is his marriage cert which will hopefully give you his mothers name and a occupation for his father. I don't know how much info UK Certs have.

Because Robertstown is such a small place the residents use the Allen Catholic Church in the parish of 'Allen' where all the baptism's are done.

Robertstown and Allen but two of the tiny villages which share the church. Please see the previous answer. Believe me I live here.
