would love to know how to trace a family member who died in antrim hosp in 1900@ but do not where to look. i have tried BMD but they could find no records. Can anyone help?? Jill :)

hi and welcome to roots chat if you give some more detail such as a name maybe we can help to look :D
-
His name was William Creth/ Creith born @1844 and died in hosp @1900. Thankyou. ;)

The local records office may have details
One of my relatives died in the lunatic asylum in Leicester and Leicester records office were able to give me the details of when he was admitted, from where and by who, as well as his records from his years in there (4 years) from admission to his death, details of what he died from and a photo - I think it was about £15 to get them sent to me on disc
But they told me that they had something for nothing (so had the exact date of death given to me - as hadn't got death certificate at that point - his home address etc for free)

HI
never worry about asking questions on here remember we all started sometime and me and a lot of others knew very little either, of ways forward so if your unsure ask the whys and wherefores no one will mind . the thing is like now if you have a post started try to keep it all together on one post rather than splitting it up as it helps folk trying to help you .
where is your first post regarding gt gt grandfather so we can see what the answers were to your question , it sounds like it should be on the Ireland board where you,ll get more folk with local knowledge .
regards
trevor
oh and a warm welcome to rootschat ;)

Hope you don't mind me suggesting that you should be continuing this on your earlier enquiry on the Antrim Board rather than starting a new one :)

Hi hillhead, it's better for everyone if you keep to the same thread so no-one wastes time by duplicating efforts!
The other thread for reference:
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=679356.msg5239361#msg5239361
EDIT: Sorry for the duplication ;D
You say he 'did not return home to be buried' - where is 'home'? What evidence do you have that he died in around 1900?
If the death was in Antrim, then freebmd.org which covers England & Wales can't help. Not sure what you mean by 'BMD can't trace anything'? Have you tried contacting www.proni.gov.uk? There's are leaflets at
http://www.proni.gov.uk/your_family_tree_series_-_25_-_general_register_office_of_northern_ireland.pdf
&
http://www.proni.gov.uk/general_information_series_-_civil_registers_and_indexes_of_births__marriages_and_deaths_held_at_the_family_history_centre_of_the_church_of_latter_day_saints.pdf
and a microfiche can be searched at any Family History Centre once you have ordered it.
There's the North of Ireland Family Hisotry Society who may have death register indexes.
http://www.nifhs.org/
Don't forget, a lot of records are not transcribed [and this is mostly done by volunteers so we have to be very grateful for what we can see online] so you may have to consult records or microfiches at a research centre. Family history is an addictive & absorbing hobby, but we can't always do it all from home!

2nd EDIT: Have asked mods to merge the 2 threads.

hiya home was townland of curramoney,in ballintoy/ballycastle north antrim. the evidence i had was from a family member who was reared in the same house with her grandparents and they spoke of him often and could trace back with relevant events to his approx death date. i contacted the births, deaths and marriages in belfast and someone returned my call and was very helpful with trying different name spellings and dates either side of 1900 but to no avail. I am unsure of where else to search and have not the first idea of searching proni and belfast is 60 miles away from me. thanks for your advice. :D

Hillhead,
Its more that likely that your relative was in Holywell Hospital which is located in the outskirts of Antrim town. The records for the hospital are in PRONI and are "closed" however you could put in an FOI request for the information stating that all close relatives to William are now deceased. Also give your relationship to William and state that you wish to see them for family history purposes. It might be a shot in the dark as you don't have a death cert, but if he did die in Holywell that should be the registrar district that his death was registered.
I went through this process a few years ago and was able to get all the hospital notes on a relative who died in 1939 - he was from North Antrim and admitted to Holywell from a local hospital in Ballymoney.
Hope this makes sense.
