Title: Burial at Walton Park Cemetery, Liverpool - COLLINS
Post by: Rowan Tree on Wednesday 26 February 14 22:02 GMT (UK)
Hi,

Wondering if anyone can help me with a burial?

I've found the following burial on Ancestry;

Walton Park Parochial Cemetery, Rice Lane, Liverpool
Catherine COLLINS
Birth: 1929
Age: 17 months
Burial: 26/06/1930
Abode: 42 Belmont Road, Walton
Reference Number: 283 WAL/4/2/22

Does anyone know how I go about finding the grave in the cemetery? Also, I've no idea if the grave was public/private or if anyone else was interred in the plot.

I'm not sure where to go from here. Any advice?

Many thanks, Rowan Tree  :)

Hi Iria,

Thanks for your post  :)

Do you know how the numbers relate to graves on the ground, so to speak? And have you any idea if any burial/grave/plot information exists. For example, whether the grave is public/private, who (if the grave is private) bought the grave, who else is buried, etc...?

Rowan Tree  :)

Having spent over a year trying to solve exactly the same puzzle I can tell you that 'Kevi' no longer works for the city farm and has proved to be 'uncontactable' so far.
Those at the farm will try to help where they can but they are not a grave finding service, they are a farm ! Bear in mind also they are a community project that is under threat from ever decreasing funding and a minimum of staff !
It appears that virtually ALL the records were destroyed during the WW2 bombing 'blitz' of the liverpool docks and seafront and St Nicholas Church was hit and burned very badly.
The example shown is from a ledger held at Liverpool Records Office in the main Library and is one of two that were salvaged from a 'skip' allegedly, therefore are not a complete record of the cemetery layout.
More here - http://forum.liverpool-genealogy.org.uk/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=12883
The prospect of locating ANY common grave interments I have to say, is nigh on impossible without the exact field reference, row location and compass reference.
It should be borne in mind that many tens of thousands of people from the workhouses, the prison and other such institutions nearby were buried as many as six deep in the 'common' plots !

1916 - 1919 during the Spanish Flu pandemic would appear to have been a very busy period for them.
Like so many others, myself included, we just have to settle with the knowledge of the sites existence and little else as yet, unfortunately.
Life had treated them so unkindly and continues to do so even in death.

There are unmarked graves in cemeteries everywhere Vic it's a general problem over many generations - people failing to recognise with fitting memorials all those buried there. Better to spend money on the living than the dead? Many old churchyards and cemeteries have been landscaped or built over. Who knows what our newer cemeteries will be in 100 years time?

Couldnt agree more Blue but this site -Walton Park- is in a unique situation and has seemingly been the end of the road for so many, both physically and metaphorically !
It is my 'brick wall' ?
Reference back to the earlier posting by 'kevi' has been quoted so many times to all of those who are recent and new enquirers (as it was to myself some time ago) and gives false hope that there is a possible answer. There isn't,and it is very disappointing if not frustrating.

Phone enquiries to the farm these days will in my experience only illicit the response that "St Nicholas Church in Liverpool now deals with such enquiries" and, again,my personal experience has been total zero from St Nicks archivist.
'Kevi' was made redundant from the farm over 18 months ago and can no longer be of any help, his suggested facebook page has also disappeared by the looks of it.

As you say,we just have to accept that they are in there 'somewhere' ?

Or to paraphrase General Plummer,1927, at the Menin Gate,"They are not missing, they are here" !

It could be an idea to copy and paste your first post onto that other thread Vic because people are bound to find that thread through doing a search and try to contact Kevi.

They will not have much success Blue. I know to my cost.
Myself and MaryA have collated a considerable number of maps/dox from far and wide concerning this site and we are hoping soon to be able to find all of the known and marked graves and possibly put GPS ref points to them on a sensible OS map. I will then try and match those known plots to the register in the LRO and see if we can find some form of logic or reason to this puzzle ? Its a longshot but its the best we can hope for and at least we should get a decent map into the public domain, and not just for the Robert Tressel monument ? I'm only hoping that we can access the paths before the serious lambing season begins and the stinging nettles arent too well established.

Okay I was a bit worried you thought he was buried at Walton Cemetery. As this is a public burial there won't be a gravestone and it's more difficult to locate it within the section but at least there are some gravestones in section 10 so by looking for numbers on the backs of the gravestones you might find the whereabouts of the burial. Section 10 is the section pinned on this link:-
