Title: family of P/O John Albert Cooper from Camberwell
Post by: Ad van Zantvoort on Tuesday 25 February 14 08:54 GMT (UK)
Hi, At this moment I researching a wartime 103 squadron Lancaster JA855,PM-A crash, shotdown over the Dutch village Elsendorp. Five crew out of the eight crewmembers where killed and three survived but became POW not long after they baled out of the stricken bomber. Amongst the crew who where killed was 21 year old Navigator Pilot Officer John Albert Basil Cooper 408628 from Camberwell, Victoria,Australia. The only info I have is that before he joined the Air Force he was a Chartered Accountants clerk. Birthplace was Balwyn and his parents where Lionel Kingsley Cooper and Ann Ethel Linda Cooper and lived at 21 Range street ,Camberwell.Vic.  I am in touch with all the crew relatives except the family of P/O J.A.B.Cooper. Have serious plans to create a memorial close where the aircraft crashed in memory of those who pay their lives for our liberty.

Regards and i looking forward to hear from anyone who can help me with this matter,
Adrian

Many,Many Thanks Ros,and Wivenhoe for your contribution.  I don't have the birth announcement for Basil Cooper and also no death notices so that's a start.  I found the link for Basil Coopers war service records a while ago but Thanks very much anyway. I do hope that we find any relatives of Basil Cooper to exchange further info ,put them in touch with the relatives of the crew and also to let them know that Basil is not forgotten.
Regards,
Adrian

Apologies if you already have this information but his personnel files are held here:

http://recordsearch.naa.gov.au
Barcode 5376186

You can request a copy by using the 'request copy' button. A fee may apply, I'm not sure.

Also there is a full digital copy of his accident report (77 pages) you can read here:

http://recordsearch.naa.gov.au
NameSearch for John Cooper
 or use Barcode 1056392

Also, the War Memorial has some limited information:

HI ianash1963,

Indeed I have already download Basils service records  but not his personnel files. They are not digital yet, and maybe not open for the public. Anyway Many Thanks for your contribution.

Hi Ros, It looks like that we are very close to the family??

Cheers,

Adrian

You can request release (digitisation) of his records if you wish. The files are marked not yet examined but it is unlikely to be a problem.

FWIW, a really quick look at the electoral rolls show the following (excluding mum and dad already identified):
1943:
Anne Ethel (junior)
Barbara Daphne Cooper

1949 (1)
Margaret Sybil Cooper
Mary Rhoda Cooper

1949 (2)
Margaret Sybil Cooper
Mary Rhoda Cooper
Betty Joan  Cooper
Joan Stella Cooper

some, none or all may be siblings... :)

Amazing Ros and "ianash1963" what you have found in no time about tracking down Basil Coppers relatives.  Let's hope that we find them, as we are getting closer and closer to the family.

Regards,
Adrian

Hi Adrian,
   Closer ....

Lionel Kingsley Cooper died in 1984 aged 93 in Cambrian Hill, Victoria.  parents Edwin Albert and Char Caroline reg 11154

Unfortunately I don't have access to victorian newspapers (past 1955)  but there are other rootschatters who do.   His death notice would give more recent family details.

cheers,
   Ros

Not sure what this means - perhaps a grandchild is named after the father?   On May 20 and 23, 2013 there are prayers for a Lionel Kingsley Cooper, for the recently departed.

Ian,
You probably need to modify your post as we are not to mention living people.  That's why we have been a little circumspect.  :)

You can hit modify and then backspace over the names.

regards,
   Ros

But a great find about the consulting company  :)  You can pm the information to Adrian.

I found the Death Notice of Lionel Kinglsey Cooper.  It names his 5 daughters, including married names and 2 sons including Basil.

I'll send it to you off list as some of them may still be alive

Hi Adrian,
I thought ianash1963 pm'd you a consulting company for a brother (or nephew?) with e-mail contact and other details?

And Maz pm'd you the names of brothers and sisters (including married names).  You can then use
whitepages http://www.whitepages.com.au/ (click on residential) to find their address and phone number.

cheers,
   Ros

That's great that you still have the info Ian  :) - I have been trying unsuccessfully to duplicate your find.

cheers,
   Ros

adding : By the way Ian I think(?) it would have been OK to post the link on here with a comment that it looked interesting  - I was concerned that you had also listed all their electoral roll info as they were still living.
