I am trying to trace great great grandfather Alexander Good born in Ireland (can't trace date) who married Amelia Armstrong in 1869 in Athlone, Ireland
He was a Sergeant Major in the 6th Dragoons , according to his son's death certificate (also called Alexander) and his three children are all born in barrack towns in Ireland. I am trying to find were he served in the army with his regiment.
If anyone can help, it would be much appreciated. Thanks

Do you have these baptisms which will give you an idea of where he is and what year?

Thanks for the information, it is very useful. I had traced the baptisms as each child is born in a different barracks town, but had been unable to trace his career further back or his birth.
Being a Scot is a bit of a surprise as I expected him to be Irish like Alexander junior (grandfather) who always said he came from Tipperary which is where the youngest child is born in August 1873. Which raises some questions if he died earlier!
Everything else that you mention seems to fit apart from the above. Thanks again

A little bit of extra info, he was awarded 5 good conduct badges. He was in possesion of the Crimea, Turkish & Sudan medals, with a clasp for Sebastopol & the Good Conduct Medal. He was also a Out-Pensioner at the Royal Hospital Chelsea.

Thanks again, all good stuff!
However, I have a few doubts as to this being the same Alexander Good. The Scottish birth has thrown me-why would he join an Irish Regiment ? Also his children were born in Newbridge (1870),Dundalk (1871) and Clonmel (1873) which were seemingly the barracks for the 6th Dragoons (Iniskillings) not Carabiniers. If he died shortly after he left the hospital was he wounded?
What & when was the war in Sudan?
Thanks everyone for your help

6th Dragoon Guards were at Newbridge in 1870 (Freeman's Journal April 5th 1870 and other contemporary papers under the heading "Stations of the British Army" - originating I think in the United Service Journal)
-
Amelia Good owned a house in Lavender Lane, Clonmel - there are Petty Sessions records from late 1873 when she is trying to regain possession from a tenant.
-
Looks like Clonmel was the Armstrongs' home town http://www.clonmelgraveyards.com/search/public-view1record.php?id=13204
-
So - Alexander dies at Aldershot in February 1873, and Amelia returns to her family in Clonmel where her child is born 6 months later.
-
Thank you all very much for all your help, it has been so much more than I expected. After looking at all the records that have been sent to me I am now sure that he is the right man in the Carabiniers.
Thanks for the extra info on Amelia Good as well.

Yes, Shaun J it would seem so, and then Amelia dies in 1881 leaving three little orphans. I wonder who cared for them. The eldest one, Alexander junior, does come to England at some point and marries Polly in 1917
-
Pleased it was the right one :)
-
Thanks all. I have now discovered great great grandad's war record and a further leg on the Armstrong family tree, which was unexpected.
Everyone has been a big help.

Came across this thread when I was trying to find further details of a John Madge who was a private in the 6th Dragoon Guards - Findmypast British Army Worldwide Index - Private John Madge Service number 314 - 6th Dragoon Guards (Carabiniers) - Dundalk, Ireland 1871 - National Archives reference WO 12/393. I have various bits of info but could do with some help in confirming this John Madge as the chap I think he is. I wondered if anybody is still out there that might be able to help?
All the best
